Find strength in message of hope – President

Christmas 2008 is taking place against the backdrop of a world plagued with turmoil and uncertainty, President Bharrat Jagdeo has said, but he is encouraging Guyanese to find strength in the holiday message of hope, peace and joy. He observed that the global financial crisis in the developed economies hit just as the world was grappling with the consequences of energy and food crises, noting that while there has been some recovery in relation to energy, climate change continues to pose a threat. “It is however amidst this galaxy of challenges that the star of Christmas shines ever so brightly, offering hope and direction to the problems of the world”, Jagdeo said.

The President urged Guyanese not to forget the aged, sick, lonely, less fortunate and vulnerable within their midst as they celebrate the holidays with loved ones and engage in the traditional exchange of gifts; emphasizing the need to show concern and offer care. He added that in so doing, it builds a better Guyana deeply committed to the values of mercy, charity and compassion. He extended Christmas wishes to all Guyanese, particularly those in the Christian community, and welcomed visitors and persons back home from the disapora, who are here for the holidays.
