Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson remanded to prison a man accused of larceny after the prosecutor pointed out that it was the third time that he was brought before the court to answer to similar charges.

Vickey Suffrein, 17, of 66 Hunter Street, Albouystown pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person when he on Monday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that on December 20, Suffrein stole a cell phone valued $20,000 from Debra Richmond.

Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that “this is the third time” that Suffrein was before the court for a case of this nature. She also said that although a person is presumed innocent the court should consider that the accused may continue to commit such offences if granted bail. Griffith said on the day in question Richmond and her mother were walking along the street when Suffrein accosted them and snatched the phone from her. She said a police patrol in the area chased and apprehended him. The phone was found in the teen’s right-side pants pocket. “Persons must be allowed to walk the road in peace,” Griffith said.

Meanwhile, Suffrein’s attorney Adrian Thompson told the court, “De police would not leave him alone.” He said the police want to keep his client in custody and that that was “why they are bringing up all these charges.” He submitted that Suffrein was never convicted of any of the earlier charges brought against him.
Suffrein was ordered to appear in Court Three on January 5.
