Carpenter remanded over stolen gold chain

A carpenter who allegedly stole a gold chain valued over $300,000 from a man was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Twenty-eight-year-old Zazim Persaud of 60 First Street, Agricola, pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person.

It is alleged that on December 24, Persaud stole a gold chain valued $340,000 from Anthony Jacobs.

However, Jacobs who was also present in court said he was willing to settle the matter since Persaud’s mother had offered to recompense him for the chain.

Persaud’s mother had handed over $200,000 to Jacobs yesterday and informed the court that she will pay the balance today.

The magistrate then ordered that Persaud be remanded to prison and returned to court today where the balance is supposed to be paid.
