What I find is that all the folks who have commented on this situation do not live in Guyana. I did not read the full article because it is so embarrasing. Who is the director of prisons? How many complaints did he make to the home affairs minister.? When was the last time the minister visited those facilities?. This is a serious matter and I think the media should be on this until there is a change in the condition. These are not the days when we did not have tv, things like these need exposing. I do get the feeling that neglect do happen in certain places and facilities because of political and racial reasons.

Reading about the dreadful stench that emanates from tha Brickdam lockups, reminded me of Marcus Rediker's book; "Slave Ship' in which he describes Olaudah Equiano a slave's narative: 'The stench which was already "loathsome," became "absoulutely pestilential" as the sweat, the vomit, the blood, and the necessary tubs, full of excrement almost suffocated us." Looks like Guyana in the twenty first century has invented its own slave ship at the Brickdam lockups.

In Guyana, we have folks, in the public sector and the private sector, talking about tourism and five star hotels, instead of modernizing some of the very basic instruments for being a modern country. The biggest joke though, is how they can continue to prattle about ideas for financing 21st century luxuries, which ironically are supposed to aesthetically co-exist in this sea of deteriorating modernity. Sorry folks, but lately your priorities for civic responsibilities, are becoming your least attractive characteristic.

Well, here we go again and it is Mr. Rohee again. According to the local independent newspapers scores of editorials and reports regarding the responsibility of Mr. Clement Rohee it MUST be concluded that he is in waaaaaaaay over his head. Mr. Rohee MUST be relieved of his duties because of the main fact that he is unable to cope with his responsibilities. He has allowed deterioration in all of his mandates, this clearly shows that he is incapable of delegating. He is incapable of negotiating for any funds that is needed to carry out his mandate. He has or does not have any access to budgetary skills and it thus follows that planning is also not a strong point.
Recall the $3M he expected from the $22M that was rejected by IDB? He could not come up with the $3M to, according to his words,” engage young people as stakeholders in the prevention of crime”. Where is his negotiating skill? Could he not get this sum from the government? Now tell me this. Where or whom will he turn to get the funds needed to improve conditions of the lock-ups. He simply does not have the skills for his present mandate. He has to go. How long will Guyanese citizens put up with his incompetence? My guess is our Pressi will head out hat in hand again!!
Mr. Rohee must have tremendous influence at Freedom House. Can anyone begin to imagine what Guyana will become if he is elected President? I leave you with this thought.

National Disgrace. Are Guyanese still ONE PEOPLE,ONE NATION,ONE DESTINY?COOLIEMAN,it shows clearly from your views that you are concerned, like many others about the treatment of our own Guyanese people.
Lock-ups are not for TORTURE and PUNISHMENT.Those employed to investigate crimes should not take the law into their hands.OUR PEOPLE are being killed and brutalised.Criminals have increased their activities.Detain them, charge them, and put them before the courts. The law should take its course. The Government should set up a fund to help all victims of crime.Things are getting worse. ..

Good editorial, govt should look into all lock ups in the country, Rohee should go or answer to the people,Lock ups are for detaining people pending investigations, Brickdam can be used for hard core criminals by the mean time and govt should find other detention centres for ordinary detainees, I am not saying that hard core criminals does not have human rights but they should not be locked up with ordinary detainees
