Many of us were at the official launch of Carifesta X.
The main speakers, the Minister of Culture and His Excellency, the President, spoke encouraging words.
When the President mentioned that Carifesta had returned home to Guyana after 36 years, one would have expected a gracious reference to the architect, initiator of Carifesta, LFS Burnham. We heard some contrived suggestion about some set of artistes and writers bringing in the idea. The man who brought Carifesta into being was Forbes Burnham.
Sadly, yet another assault on the truth and in the relentless campaign, more of a religious type crusade, to rewrite our history.
Had the idea of Carifesta been that of the late Dr Jagan, his name would have been emblazoned everywhere as the father of Carifesta and half of President Jagdeo’s speech would have been devoted to praising his vision.
Let us give jack his jacket. This will be a start to healing.
How could our National Leader call as he did, for the support of the opposition when he and others set out to ignore the good that Burnham did and seek every opportunity to highlight negatives about the man and his party.

This is my point exactly. The PNC is remiss in allowing the current administration to re-write history. Today to say anything positive about Burnham is to incite the most vicious attacks from the PPP gatekeepers. There must be a fair and balanced presentation of the facts.
As far as I know, he is being recognized as the founder of Carifesta. Ignore anything that says differently.
Let’s be patient. When Carifesta X opens in August, President Jagdeo will have an opportunity to give due acknowledgement to Comrade Burnham as the initiator of Carifesta.
Burnham created Carifesta with the intention of wisening people to know and see what could give you a comfortable life…at the same time being responsible for architecturing the demise of our people and nation. What good did Burnham deliver to his nation from his invention of Carifesta? Why should he be praised? If Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb didn’t work, or wasn’t beneficial to his people would he be praised today? Burnham belongs where “Comrade” belongs…non existent.
The PPP wants to erase everything good done by the prior gov’t. Yet they are adopting many of the policies from the Burnham reign and implementing it. How shameless can they be?
I blame the PNC for this. Like all administrations..e.g “BUSH”, some will see them as absolutely horrible and others will recognize the positives. It is the responsibility of the PNC party to secure Burnham and Hoyte’s legacy. The longer this PPP governement remains in power, the more people see the positives in Burhnam’s reign…”the more I look at you, the better I like me” LOL. Of course this will set off the rabid PPPers…can’t wait to witness the attacks…ROTFL
