Dear Editor,

I often read the comments of track and field athletes who say they train in foreign nations so they can prepare to compete at a high level, because we do not have the facilities here to accommodate them, or send them to international meets. In addition, grass cannot prepare our rising stars to challenge the world.
I have a suggestion and a challenge to Guyanese the world over. Why don’t we set up a Stadium Fund at the Bank of Guyana and solicit funding from Guyanese the world over. We could provide a donation link on every major website and give it strong promotion. At $20 and up we could build a world class track and field stadium.
Let us show our Guyanese pride.

Yours faithfully,
Gavin Bailey

You definitely do not have my support!

Wake up people – we have a cricket stadium as a white elephant now, and you want a track and field stadium too!

Great idea and you have my support. I watch the news on NCN/TV and I’m blown away when I see top athletes running on grass tracks at GCC ground.

At the risk of falling prey to “me-too-ism”…yeah, count me in too! I just drove past a high school in Wash DC that just had a rubberized track and artificial turf laid in….to go along with its floodlights and new bleachers. A HIGH school!

As long as I can be convinced that no jiggery-pokery will take place, I will be happy to lend my support.

Unlike say, a cricket pitch, such a facility can be multi-use. I think it would provide more bang for the buck than a certain aforementioned cricket stadium.

I am all for a better training ground for our athletes. But we need to be very careful especially where our hard earned $’s are concerned. I mean let’s take a glance at the Guyana situation currently with all its problems. Also we need to form a body – a committed one- (outside of Gy) to be in charge of our hard earned $20 and Ups.
Also let’s think about it being benefical to our generations in the future – not just immediate – and where we would like to have this dream athletic facility – certainly Not in GT area Nor anywhere along the continuous rising Atlantic. Let’s think about our higher grounds – I would say Linden or somewhere along the highway.
I am sure many of us would go for this idea but these things need to be in place (at least in theory/plan ) before we think of subscribing any $.

Mr. Bailey this is a great idea. However, most overseas Guyanese are consumed by political spin and partisan bickering, rather than solutions.
