Dear Editor,
The only thing that seems to dominate Guyanese news is death and despair. What can we celebrate after achieving forty-two years as an independent nation? Nothing of significance that demonstrates any socio-economic progress. The people of Guyana are still poor and consequently the moral decay is disheartening.
Where will we be in the next forty years? Maybe we will be rid of the clutches of racial politics that benefit the political elites; this I hope and pray for. The people of Guyana have to decide at what point in their political independence they need to put an end to the mismanagement of Guyana’s human and natural resources. Do not let the few divide you and rule. For truly, you are ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny.’
Yours faithfully,
K. Persaud

I agree that Guyana has nothing much to show after 42 years, in fact I think we slipped backwards a bit.
From the inception, all of our leaders were always preoccupied with RULING the nation instead of SERVING the people, when we allow this to happen we get ideas and policies going top down instead of bottom up. This quickly becomes authoritarian as opposed to being democratic. The administration starts to ORDER the people and not LISTEN to the needs of the people. The opposition of the day then jumps on this calling it marginalisation and everything goes downhill from here.
Guess what!..Guyana’s politics are an infantile recurring equation where the new bunch eventually governs exactly the same way the old ones did and the result is no progress. They use the same play book although they promised to be different.
We are far from a perfect nation. But, we have an infant democracy that was fought for very hard. One of the great Guyanese paid with his blood – “Sir Walter Rodney”. It took the great, USA over 10 decades to realize its potential, even with free slave labour. With unity, handwork and a bit of optimism, we have our days in the sun.
Aeneas,
Live in Hope
Die in Despair
Whatever progress Guyana ever makes will be in another life-time.
Definitely not in mine (I have another 30 to go according to my horoscope!)
Not a reasonable comparison to the USA, because they continued to grow year after year despite racism.
Guyana under colonialism did grow year after year, but since the end of that system, Guyana has declined year after year. I have witnessed that decline and I can speak with sure knowledge of the decline.
Right now:
1. we have no unity
2. the politicians are a poor lot both in knowledge and skill
3. graft and official corruption abound
4. vindictiveness is the order of the day
5. honesty is a word that does not exist
6. infrastructure is allowed to deteriorate until it is clear that something
has to be done, then it is done shoddily
7. the once splendent capital city is deliberately allowed to be ramshackle of buildings and rough roads and poor drainage and the government is the least concerned about it
8 pride in oneself and one’s surroundings mean nothing nor is it a practised attitude.
9. the list is too long to continue.
Probably by the end of the NEXT CENTURY, that new generation might develop the country, that is if by that time Canada and the USA do not open their immigration doors free to all Guyanese!
Everyone would then leave !!
True true.
Exactly, the country has been a total failure since Independence. What makes it more hurtful is the fact that Guyana was better off (or equal to) at Independence relative to places like Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.
I remember when Brunham was ‘running things’ all of his supporters were saying ‘One people One nation One destiny’ while Jagan’s reply was ‘you on you own dictator’
Nowadays The ppp are in power and, singing the same patriotic tune with the opposing reply practically identical.
That’s Guyana ‘a half and then another half’ never the whole; the result is a split country fertilized for corruption, cronyism and nepotism.
No wonder we are all waiting for our visas.
Some people Love it just the way it is .This goverment is asking its neighbour to come and farm in guyana instead of offering the thousands of unemployed men and women in guyana the land …… How can we move forward after 42 years .
Carl Vee, thats a precise description of the PNC and what they were “since the end of that (colonialism) system”. So now, who really responsible fuh GT being how it is? You have truly spoken indeed. Guess what, that’s why I don’t like them, and another thing, its them who cause me and you fuh deh out hay. True true eh?
And what is causing the thousands still making back door exists or knocking on the doors of little islands like Grenada to leave eh? The emigration volume have not decreased since the PPP came to power. What is strange is that you guys who are always praising its accomplishments are not prepared to walk the walk. You talk the talk from afar, but are not prepared to go back and live under the regime you extol. What hypocrisy!
I am of the beleive that Guyana needs a new system of government, and not one where all the power is based in georgetown. There need to be governors of the counties, with the power to do imports and exports police force and local taxes and schools. The central government/president controls the army and is the direct rep.to other countries. This way it will be easier for the locals to get answers to problems that is in their counties, and would not have to go to the president’s office to lodge a complain about your bridge fell down, “you get the idea”
And where are you in this “prepared to go back and live under the regime you extol”?
Hypocrisy? or just empty mouthings talking ” the talk from afar,”?
More likely the latter !
Now get rid of that flag and put up a Guyana one in place !.
