Dear Editor,
Yesu Persaud nowadays is very much in the news, and I don’t envy him, for as a true Guyanese he has done a lot of good work for Guyana. The President does owe him an apology, but in political circles we know that when an event occurs such as the current one, there is generally some underlying current. Right now we don’t really know.
Today I picked up a copy of a programme for a function held here in Toronto on May 31 last by the Vedic Cultural Centre, and I noticed an article with the title ‘The Indian Monument Gardens and the Indian Commemoration Trust (Guyana)’ by Dr Yesu Persaud. Could you clarify for me if Yesu Persaud has a doctorate and if so, in what field and from which university? Is the doctorate an honorary doctorate, and doesYesu Persaud use this title in Guyana?
Yours faithfully,
Carl Veecock
Editor’s note
In a release dated April 28, 2008, the University of Warwick in the UK announced the names of those who had been awarded honorary degrees this year. Among them was Yesu Persaud, who is an Associate Fellow of the University of Warwick Centre for Caribbean Studies, and who will formally receive his honorary Doctor of Letters degree at a ceremony in July.

Carl, It is none of your business when, where and how Mr Yesu Persaud earned his doctorate. Be honest, it clearly shows envy on your part….
Man…like de plantain stick in yuh head!
I worked with Yesu many years ago and over the years I followed his dedication
and application, and his diplomatic skills, and have been more than pleased that
the decision he made many years ago to return and serve his country was a
good one.
However I lost sight of this ‘doctorate’thing’, not ever having heard of it before I saw the print. Was someone trying to make a fool of him in that print?
I am pleased that the Editor rose to the enquiry and I am looking forward to the
reports and pictures of the occasion.
Eat your heart out plantain…you probably are hungry for meat!
I first met Dr Yesu Persaud in Brixton Road, London,in 1965 or 1966 when he told a friend and me that he was returning to Guyana. In the very brief meeting he impressed me a great deal. I met him again a few time in Georgetwon in the 1970s and I was greatly impressed with his discussion he had with a number of my friends in my apartment. From what i read about his achievements in Guyana, he certainly deserved the award of a doctorate from the University of Warwick, which is a very good university in the UK.
