Dear Editor,
I wish on behalf of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) to congratulate the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Dr Steve Surujbally, on the albeit belated recognition that the Official List of Electors used in the 2006 elections was bloated in excess of some 100,000 names.
If only Dr Surujbally had relied less on his highly paid experts from abroad and paid more attention to the reports pouring in from opposition scrutineers, there would have been no need to raise up the cry “No Verification No Elections!”
Yours faithfully,
Desmond Trotman

What do you expect when migration is so damn high! No list ever produced could be 100% accurate and that said, how does the “No Verification…” ensure that those overseas are not disenfranchised? Or have they lost their vote?
Of course the list was bloated, correct me if i am wrong some 500 thousand plus were on the list for 2006. Now that persons over 14 are now registered the list is just over 400 thousand. Certainely it was bloated.
This meant that turnout was higher than had previously been believed. I wonder what the real figures are ie, population demographics etc.
You know SN, you ought to do an investigative story on that. I am now dying to know and I am sure a lot of Guyanese would like to know in light of this new revelation.
