Dear Editor,
I wish to applaud B. Singh for his brilliant suggestion of July 11 in SN (‘Ashni Singh for President’) as to who should succeed President Bharat Jagdeo when he relinquishes the presidency come the next general elections.

Indeed, the interest of the Guyanese people must be paramount and understood at its fullest when the PPP convenes for its upcoming congress. No doubt, there are many well-qualified candidates, including some who have provided donkey’s years of service and dedication to the party and the country at large. But the country needs someone whose academic and political credentials command total respect from both sides of the aisle in Parliament, and who can provide that much-needed breath of fresh air as the country continues on a course of progress after so many difficult years.

Dr Ashni Singh possesses the wherewithal – academic, political, and charismatic, to fill the shoes President Jagdeo is expected to leave vacant. He has proved beyond a shadow of doubt, in his relatively short tenure as Minister of Finance, how energetic he can be. And coming to the national scene as a technocrat, he has established an unassailable reputation as an indefatigable, no-nonsense workhorse, dedicated to the task of improving the lot of the Guyanese people. And he has no baggage; he’s clean as a whistle.

I, one of so many who jumped ship may years ago to seek outside greener pastures, am all packed up and ready to head back home to be there to contribute to, and witness, the country’s successful resurgence from too many years of hardship. I know that countless others are considering doing the same, and feel confident that the clearly improved security atmosphere in the country and Dr Ashni Singh’s leadership will instil confidence among the faint-hearted and that the repatriation levels will soar over time.

I hope that the PPP will do the right thing and choose Dr Ashni Singh as its standard bearer for the next elections and beyond.
Yours faithfully,
Abel Peters

The wonderful ‘feel-good’ message in Abel Peters second to last paragraph show there is a tremendous positivity in the Diaspora. This is not just wishful thinking/hope because there are very tangible examples of inward Diaspora investment happening all the time.
The most recently reported being the newly commissioned Hotel Complex at Versailles http://www.aracariresort.com/

Control of crime in Guyana, however, is paramount for this current trickle to become a welcome flood of return investment.

Abel Peters welcomes the idea of Ashni Singh for President and as well as endorsing that idea, I feel moves should be made to convince Mr Jagdeo to take back his old job at the Finance ministry.

  2. Raymond Persaud UNITED KINGDOM says:

I full agree that Ashni is the man for the job. Lets get the young and educated people in there who are interested in running the country.
We have seen that the so called “grassroot” individuals are ignorant of many things, illiterate and corrupt. They are only for themselves and families and it seems as though the POWER has gotten to them.
It is time that we as a people wake them up since they are not representing the poor any longer.

  3. Evan CANADA says:

You guys are sitting pretty out of Guyana, where ever you are. Abel should have been in Guyana since 1999 why wait until 2011 for Ashni, a lame duck finance minister like his predecessor. And Satish, you want Jagdeo back at Finance, you guys have to be joking, right??

  4. gap1 UNITED STATES says:

Great! Fill a failed president’s shoes in a failed administration! What do you do to fill it? Turn into a failure yourself? LOL!

Great lobbying work but a bit too obvious, whoever Abel Peter is! Is there really an Abel Peters?

    Anybody? LOL!

  5. yasuman71 UNITED STATES says:

Abel Peters, your fellow Berbician and longtime friend Moses Nagamootoo will never forgive you for writing this letter. He may think you’ve betrayed him like Judas Iscariot. But why do you prefer Ashni Singh over Ralph Ramkarran, who has more credentials?

  6. A380100 UNITED STATES says:

I hope none of them get elected.

  7. gap1 UNITED STATES says:

Oooookaaay Yasuman71, here’s the deal, don’t try to start a phony issue here! You, Yasuman71 or is it you, Abel Peters, whichever one you are or is it a Singh family member or friend? I don’t know, I could only suspect!

Your lobbying would be so-so, I guess…if it’s not so freakin’ obvious and outdated!

My advice to you? ….. :Power down and restart your computers with respecting the intelligence of Guyanese.

We are smartish, you know! Sometimes, we could even be brilliant! LOL!
