Dear Editor,

I have noted comments made by President Bharrat Jagdeo, several letter-writers et al, to the effect that I and the Guyana Press Association (GPA) are part of the opposition forces and the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).

I wish to state categorically that I have never been and I do not intend to become a member of any political party or their allied organisations whether in government or opposition. I challenge anyone to furnish incontrovertible evidence to the contrary.

As is well known in certain circles, I speak with politicians, political activists and their associates on all sides of the political divide in my capacity as a journalist. I do so fearlessly and without apology to anyone.

As a matter of fact, this sitting executive of the GPA has never taken any political directive or instruction from any politician, political party or their affiliate organisations in our differences on media matters with the administration of President Jagdeo.

Further, we have been very careful in ensuring that our activities and positions are not taken over or influenced by political parties and their members/supporters/ sympathisers.

Yours faithfully,
Denis Chabrol
President
Guyana Press
Association

your actions speak louder than your words chabrol

The President never said you were a member of the PNC,he simply referred to you and your organisation as being the new opposition.

Perception can become the material force of reality if more and more people believe what they hear or observe. By his own utterances and actions Denis Chabrol gave people the impression he is anti-PPP Government. Let’s hope against hope that his denial of political affiliation in this letter will be believed.

How some ppl suh dunce the President never said u works for a political party. He said the media in Guyana are operatiing like the new oposition party. The private media that is.

  5. gap1 UNITED STATES says:

Sure! You appose King Jagdeo, you’re the opposition!

In fact anyone who appose King Jagdeo is the bad guy. Let’s all fall on our knees when we’re in his presence and worship him! Who does this guy think he is anyway, a servant of the people or the other way around? The press is charged with a responsibility and thank God they have the guts to do it in the face of this man’s sometimes, vicious reaction! Look at SN, Benschop, Sharma and now Moseley and he is innocent? Give me a break already!

And you apologists ought to be ashamed of yourselves! How can you support such wrongdoing and still be able to look God in the eyes when you pray?

I’ve got news for all you PPPites on this blog! The press is free to have a dissenting opinion of the president, and at a period in time when the govt is so wrong, so encreasingly authoritarian, a president so arrogant with so many ministers breaking the laws of Guyana and still functioning in their respective portfolios, the press would be neglecting its duty to ignore that and by god they do have that right to “appose” that!

Again, I find it interesting to note, that many who apposed Burnham for committing similar acts of denying people their basic constituional rights, find themselves cuddling the Jagdeo’s Administration and actually making excuses for their wrongdoing.

Remember some of Burnham’s worst critics were once his supporters, and in fact some paid with their lives and they were, in the majority Afro-Guyanese who made their oppostion to him quite known, put their lives on the line to do so, and I am proud of them! Proud as a punch!

In fact, Rodney was violently assasinated in 1980, a mere 12 years after Burnham rigged his first elections in 1968. Mr. Eusi Kwayana lives now as a living hero who walks among us.

How about placing Guyana first like they did! How about it, eh?

Here is my warnig to you Indo-Guyanese on this baord: Do not let it be ever said or seen by Afro-Guyanese that in their hour of need, Indo-Guyanese would not join this struggle against Jagdeo as they joined Indo-Guyanese in their stuggle against Burnham.

You might give them a reason to see an undemocratic African-Guyanese led Govt as justified and that would be tragic because no one knows what the future holds and in the event we do get another Burnham, they may not be so willing to help the second time around!

    Enough said!

As an afro-guyanese you rallied around Walter , but my guess is you could’nt bring yourself to support Cheddi who was in the struggle long before Rodney.
If anything we owe the Clinton administration for removing the despots that ruled Guyana.
Trust me and your kind had nothing to do with Guyana’s liberation.

I hope Mr. Jagdeo knows who the real opposition is, maybe in 2011 it may be the PPP’s own consistuents if he isn’t careful.

  7. bbuckman UNITED STATES says:

i believe in human values. And i belong to a political party that i think can realise those values.
so to say you do not belong to a political party does not say anything special.

  8. gap1 UNITED STATES says:

I am too young to have rallied around Cheddie. I represent the future of my country, Cheddie, and maybe you are relics, fossils if you will.

My entire mindset is Guyana, not PPP or PNC.
