Dear Editor,

Some things in life are difficult to fathom. The way our law and order functions is definitely one of them, and finding a reason why some people in a position of authority do what they do is another. Often the things that we see make a mockery of the law, which must diligently be adhered to by ordinary citizens while it is brazenly disregarded by others. The campaign against loud music from boom boxes in minibuses and heavily tinted windscreens and windows in vehicles is nothing more than ‘Nancy story.’ Everywhere you turn the lewd music in buses is even louder than before the campaign started – the music can be heard a mile away! There are traffic cops on the beat, and yet nothing is done to stop them; even the cops travel daily in them, well overloaded.

But what can you expect when the police who must enforce law/order set no example? Take for instance, this Linden case. A policeman drives around in a vehicle with the windscreen and windows as black as tar, with music resonating at the highest decibel level. Now, one is at a loss to figure out how a member of the disciplined forces can behave so irresponsibly, oblivious to all and sundry; whether he is in the vicinity of a school, church or hospital, the music is at a constant high. I was told that he even drives into the police compound no differently, to the disgust of some officers.

But why is it he is not being upbraided by his seniors? As one rank commented, “I does can’t tek wha he does do.” Is it any wonder that our society is disintegrating?

So reckless driving, speeding, boom music, heavily tinted vehicles, overloading, are only fussed about whenever something dreadful/fatal occurs; then they are soon forgotten. It is nothing more but a Nancy story – end of story.

Yours faithfully,
Frank Fyffe
