Of course Mr. Putin wants to see the old Russian bear back in the rankings as super power. In a changing world this should not be allowed; if America makes the same mistake again at the polls, then Russia we will continue to mirror America's game. MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO!

Basically the West got played because it did not control it's wayward pawn.
The Georgian president comes over as someone who is very emotional and the Russians mostly likely knowing his temperament set the stage and waited on the "canary to jump on the gum stick." For the history books; this is the easiest political setup of the last 100 years. Nationalist Russia will most likely milk the strategic benefits for all it worth.

Mr Mervin is spot on as usual. Makes a change from all the pro-Russian drivel that has been written recently.

Mr Coxall doesn't seem to understand that if Georgia had been a NATO member, the Russians wouldn't have invaded in the first place. Putin is not stupid. The Georgian government and people want Georgia to be a member of NATO and the EU, precisely to prevent what has happened over the last two weeks from happening again. Why does Mr Coxall suppose that Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and all the other former "Warsaw Pact" countries were in such a hurry to join NATO and the EU?

It is vital that NATO and the EU stand up to the Russian bullies. Otherwise, Putin will set his sights on Ukraine, then Estonia, then Latvia, then Lithuania, and so on and so on.

Russia is not the Aggressor here. George Bush wanted to pull Georgia into NATO but the European members felt it was too risky and they were right. If Georgia had been a NATO member, European members would have been forced to come to her defence and hence world war 111. GB would have been sitting safely with his family in the White House while the bombs rain down on European cities.

The Georgia leader was insighted to attack Ossetia for two reasons, first to see how Russia would respond and second to use Russia's response to convince NATO that Georgia indeed need their protection under membership. The plan has backfired because all of Europe sees it for what it is "Naked Aggression" incited by GB and his banking masters.

They want to surround Russia with "Defensive Shields", placing these missile sites in Gerogia, Poland and Yogaslavia. The reason GB says is to deter any attack from IRAN. Every European nation knows it is to isolate Russia from developing her oil industry as a competitor in the region as opposed to US oil industries dominance in the world.

A number of countries are already conducting trade in oil and other goods, in exchange for Euros and the Japanese Yen. If they start trading in Rubles it will seriously threaten the US economy and the plans of the puppet masters to control the world by drowning it in a sea of debt. They are therefore, agitating war and disruption with the only other country that has enough oil to challenge their control of that commodity. That country is Russia..

Re: "Georgia’s strategic mistake, therefore, has become Russia’s strategic mission and may yet become America’s latest nightmare...." What a misnomer. :-( and a very simple response; re: "Russia's invasion of Georgia, which is very similar to Hitler's 1939 invasion of the Sudetenland (and we all know how that turned out). It is a dilemma of the same magnitude told by the ancient Greek writer Thucydides in his classic Milean Dialogue. The U.S. may now have to choose between defending a staunch U.S. ally and offending a resurgent Russian Bear..."

Remember this Clinton Administration's election slogan anyone: "It's The Economy - Stupid"!

Enlightening and to the point, I do hope the November electorate sees their answer to the these and other problems hinged on bad decisions made at the polls and seek to enforce the motto " Change we can believe in" at the next opportunity.
