Dear Editor,

I hope all of Guyana is taking note of the Beijing Games and what is necessary for success. We need to embrace sports from the kindergarten level all the way to the national level. Gone are the days when parents use to say, “A din sen yuh to school fuh run, a sen yuh fuh learn.” Well they both go hand in hand. Parents need to support their kids by attending their games across the country. And the government along with the private sector need to support them 100%. It’s a small sacrifice that pays huge dividends.

We need to invest in a turf track stadium where athletes can train and compete for stardom. I think we are the only nation on earth without a turf track. If the government could set up a national sports fund account at the bank, with donation links on all possible websites and even a collection box at the bank for locals who may not have internet access, I can assure you that Guyanese the world over would gladly contribute to this national cause.

We can use these funds to build a stadium and provide continued financial support to our athletes whereever they may be.

We can do it!

Yours faithfully,
Gavin Bailey

I fully agree with the Writer above, Guyana has so much potential in the Young people, they need to have somewhere, where they can train, Guyanese should be able to take part in the Swimming competition also, are we not a Land of Many Waters. Give them somewhere in the Lethem area for field and Track, they will be away from the lure of partying in the city, four years is enough time to teach them to become Outstanding atlethes in Body and Mind.

I totally agree with the above article. Guyanese athletes will not reap the benefits of success in Athletics until Guyana get a proper training facility where these athletes can train each day. The all weather track will improve their speed, endurance, form and technique for their specific events. The weight training program will strengthen their extremities and entire body. This has been the disadvantage of all the Guyanese athletes who train in Guyana all year around and try to compete in events outside of Guyana. Some of them do well, but they can so a better representation with a good refined training program and a training facility. There are organizations and nation building countries who will volunteer to assist in making this happen and give this as a gift to Guyana. They can use the same process which was utilized to get the National Stadium built. Athletics is a big part of Guyanese society and the country deserve to have a venue where everyone can come out and cheer on the athletes. With this in mind, Guyana will be able hold their championships where they invite all Guyanese athletes to take part in the games. Guyana has many excellent athletes with talent but if this talent is not harnessed and channeled to breed success, Guyana will continue to fail in the major athletics events around the world. I was a child athlete in while I was in Guyana and this was a long time ago and there were not speed track then and there is none now. I have been wondering why this has not occurred as yet. I am sure this has been brought many times before but no results came of it. Guyana Number one sport is cricket, as everyone can see there are Venues to play cricket on all levels. The National Stadium was built to host the last world cup of cricket. Athletics has always taken a back a back seat to all other sports in Guyana. A National Athletics Stadium will allow all Guyanese athletes to train for success. The time has come Guyana to come together to make this happen. I am sure many of the businesses will sponsor project such as this. This is something which has to be taken up with Dr. Anthony the Minister of sports.
