Dear Editor,

On Diwali day around 3pm, my neighbours and kids began to light off firecrackers and squibs. I was going berserk in my sleep as I am sick, and I asked them to stop, but they did not stop and started to use foul language I called the Anna Regina Police Station and spoke to Cpl Perry and Constable Duncan; they promised to send out their patrol. I waited hoping for their arrival but they never came to warn the perpetrators to desist from lighting firecrackers.

On Diwali night, around 6.30pm the nightmare continued with endless firecrackers and squibs from all and sundry, and while the patrol vehicle was passing it got more brazen. The perpetrators justified it by saying, “Others are doing it, why can’t we?” I have the bad luck to live next to some uncaring neighbours and experienced first hand what sick and elderly people have to go through. I provide this information to the public to show that is a waste of time complaining to the police. Never mind peace and goodwill; this is the season of noise nuisance and danger: squibs, firecrackers and the infernal bombs. It is vital for the police to carry out their duties and charge these perpetrators so citizens can sleep in peace.

Yours faithfully,
Mohamed Khan
Former Deputy Mayor
Anna Regina Town Council

Play nice nauth. Everybody should be shown the same amount of respect regardless of their religious background. They issue is not about religious celebrations but rather the noise level late at night (disturbing the peace) and to besides, isn’t fire crackers illegal???

our young people are not being educated the way most of us were many years ago. I believe that education is education! Our children today are not educated. Some people see education as academical success, I see education as having moral values and decency. Things will only get worse. No use praying for change, sometimes we have to take justice into our hands to make changes, should an entire neighbourhood take a stand, they can stipulate the way things happen in that neighbourhood. Fact is, no one wants to do anything, they just complain, and still complain even though their complaints are ignored by the authorities responsible for protecting the interest of these citizens. Stop complaining and seek measures necessary to end or appease your problem. The police will not help you, they can’t help you, this is an “education” problem.

I agree with you 99%- you’re right on everything except education does include academics.

GT people need to stop complainin and tek de bull by de horns.

Noise levels cannot be over the prescribed lawful decibels. Find out what those decibel levels are from the Ministry responsible and if they are exceeded, and how to measure them. Then make your complaints to the police. Public flogging for thisnow common nusiance appears to be the only way to curb this brazen disrespect for others.

  7. 8R-DAW BRAZIL says:

Theo, When I said that people consider education as being mainly based on academics, I wanted to show that they desregarded education based on values. I am aware that academics is part of the educational structure. We use this education basically for professional purposes. Today we can see especially in public service workers the lack of the kind of education I am talking about. When we go to school, we are working our way up the academical structure. However, we cannot alow our success in our academic endeavours to let us think we have education. I still believe that more doors are opened to those who has along with his certificates, basic(good manners) education.
