Dear Editor,
I have been following the debate in the press concerning the allegations of ‘torture’ and ‘roughing -up.’
Mr Editor, unless you are completely blind, one could not possibly view the published photos, both in black and white and in colour, of the injuries suffered by Messrs Sumner and Jones and honestly say that they were not tortured − no matter what your individual meaning of the word torture is.
But what is more important to me, however, is the question − whether it be torture or roughing-up – which one is legal?
Yours faithfully,
Randolph J Eleazar

Mr Eleazar I am having a similar problem about Torture and Roughing Up.A friend of mine was roughed up by a Policeman in Georgetown, and he had to visit the dentist for repairs. He admitted to me that he had misbehaved after drinking, and when arrested he resisted and the cop landed a right uppercut. He pleaded guilty with a swollen jaw.Could not eat for a few days.Could that be classified as a”ROUGH UP” To my mind that was an assault.Further I think that Rough-Up is a form of torture. The Legal brains should be able to help us.Time for a test case.
Maybe Minister Robert Persaud MBA can help to explane the
meaning of “ROUGH UP” , let us start with him BIG D.
isn’t sumner and jones the two guys who lost an ak47? what y’all want the police to do? put them up in a fancy hotel with tv,cell phones and maybe some women to keep them company? if that ak is ever found and it is discovered that it has killed someone then these guys should be charged with murder.
Jack %&$, Summer and Jones were not the soldiers who lost the AK47 rifles, they are innocent civilians living in Buxton who were taken from their homes and badly beaten by the Joint Services……………….Jack @$%
quibian…you lost me here.
Is what we talking about?
Is is torture or roughing up?
Now what you talking about?
Clearly not about what the letter writer questioned!
I say roughing-up needs to be defined, for if injuries result, then it moves to
another zone. I would prefer ‘man-handling’, for sometimes to get across the
message some arrested persons have to be manhandled, but in the process
no physical harm should be done.
The letter writer is a lawyer, so I think he is stretching the point.
If the letter writer is a lawyer,he knows what is legal. The surname Eleazar rings a bell.If he is an ex magistrate, then he should be re-appointed.Criminals were afraid to appear before him. That was in the 60’s.He helped the police to keep crime under control. He was strict but fair.
Congratulations Sandhurst, you are a very keen blogger to point out those facts. Some of us are getting mixed up with some of these matters.Bring them back on track.Know that Sumner and Jones were taken away from Buxton. As you said, they were innocent.Up to this day they have not been convicted for any crime.Well done Sandhurst.
Ask the Supreme Court. It is the highest law of the land.
Well said Sandhurst. I think people (quibian) should get their facts straight before they come here lambasting other people.
SandHurst First….stay cool man.
We gat nuff posters off de right track…so stay cool and laugh it off.
