Something has gone wrong

Dear Editor,
Responsible citizens ought to note some unhappy attitudes which seem to be consuming our society. This may seem a small matter, but I think it requires all of our religious, political and civic bodies to examine what is really happening to the moral and social fabric of society.

First, I compliment the newspaper which carries the photo article ‘It bothers Me,’ including those which are critical of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council. For those concerned, the city may feel guilty, but by now citizens would know that we are battling against principalities and powers, as well as many factors which disable us. With our meagre human and financial resources, we will continue to deliver as best we can. But we seem to have a wider problem.

One: As I drove around the city this morning, there is an increasing number of ‘human derelicts’ that are contributing to the creation of ugly dumpsites everywhere. They throw things out and create ugly sites just minutes after the area has been cleared.  Christmas is coming, we need the cooperation of everyone to put their waste in bags and sprinkle same with a solution of Jeyes fluid or some other strong disinfectant when placed in their yards or bins for collection.
Next: At about 9.15 am today, I observed three groups of schoolchildren walking casually along the road. I spoke to one group; they said that school convened at 9 am and another group said school started some time after 8 am. Neither seemed to be in any hurry.

These are little indictors that something has gone wrong, and this is certainly not the time for the blame-game, but for all of us in our respective organizations to come together, not as a public relations exercise, but in a genuine effort to do something. What some leaders do not realize is that when, as is apparent today, the social and moral fabric of society is torn that we  all become victims, no matter how lofty our position or lowly our status. This requires an effort that goes beyond party, religion or other allegiances.

The big question of course is, who will bell the cat?
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green, JP

and in any case you are part and parcel of the very problem you wrote about….
be a man and stand up for the people of guyana and tell your leader corbin to work with govt and the people of guyana to get rid of the scourage…….

There is reason for you to insult the Mayor, If you know what is better for Guyana why did you leave. You are not solving the problem he discussed

Well my evileyes said.. ” Hammy its you who should bell the kitty cat …”

I say evileyes DEAD DEAD WRONG.
    Not Hammy. NO…NO…NO.. he cannot

But I am not rising to Hammie’s defence:

    1. he is one of the primary causes of the ineffectiveness of the M & TC with the
constant bickerings with the authoritarian Town Clerk

    2. he is a spent force and fails to recognise that fact. Politicians must know
that there is an exit and that they should take it early. Hammie keeps
hanging on and on and on…uselessly. Retire and head up here and live
comfortably. Yuh tink dat he wud tek meh advice? Just wait…

    3. everytime he writes and gets audience, he simply revives unpleanant thoughts
of his powerful political days. That just gets people irritated to read, see and
hear. Stay quiet is my counsel and demit the scene unnoticeably

There is no cat to bell here.

IS A PIT BULL ROAMING AND RAVING AND READY TO TEAR UP EVERYTHING.

So Hammie…read and inwardly digest…..demit the scene NOW and stay QUIET !

Where has something gone wrong? In your city. You have the human resources in place, but you don’t know how to utilize those resources. Instead, Mr. Mayor, all you do is complain through this medium. Send out your sanitary inspectors accompanied by members of YOUR city police force so that they can issue sumonses when an infraction of the city by laws is identified. Call on the city business community to ensure that the front of their business is kept free and clear of encumberances and debris. Issue tickets to them when this is not done. Act Mr. Mayor. If the Central Government fails to assist as required, don’t let me or other bloggers tell you what to do, you are a smart man. Act Mr. Mayor. This is no time for being Mr. nice. Don’t play steel pan while your city smells. If you were a Roman I would say something else. Again, have your city police do their work. You are the Mayor of the city and it is your responsibility to ensure that the laws governing business conduct, loud music, traffic control, garbage collection and other municipality responsibilities be carried out. Oh! the Town Clerk, what are you going to do to address the functionality of that office? We “outsiders” want to hear from you Mr. Mayor. We want to know that you have an Internet web site that informs us of the day to day operations of the city; we want to know the names of the city councilors who are disfunctional; we want to know the names of businesses and citizens who fail to pay taxes; we want to know of your budgetary concerns; we want to know that our beloved city of Georgetown is crime free; we want to know, in essence, that you are doing your job. Ulric…you should consider sending your post as a Letter to the Editor.

Hammie would surely see it then and perhaps add his addendum, now
that he has become a ‘writer’.

Nuff nuff words coming from him of late.

Gone wrong? An understatement. Anarchy pevailed after 1992 because of a weak government response to a crime wave. You have to realize a hopeless case when you see one.Guyana.
