Dear Editor,

International Day for the Disabled 2008 will be here again on December 3. For the 650 million disabled persons globally, the United Nations ratified a convention in May 2008 to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities.

Some countries have ratified this convention and we are hoping others would do so in the near future. In Guyana today we still do not have a Disability Act that has been written into the statute books. We wonder how long we would have to wait for this.

In the interest of the rights and recognition of disabled persons we would hope that we would not have a prolonged wait.

Yours faithfully,
Laurie Greenidge

I am actually surprised the nation does not have one. Planning and zoning laws will also have to reflect the changes to building design also. I suggest the authorities adopt the South Florida Building code,it’s Materials and Methods of Construction, as the Building code for Guyana.
