Dear Editor,

I am for protecting, clothing and feeding our children, but I am totally against lying to our children.

During the Christmas season our children are told fibs about some chubby Caucasian man flying around the world, dropping off gifts. This man knows whether you have been “naughty or nice.” Why do we fill the heads of our children with this nonsense? We talk about protecting our children from abuse and violence, what about protecting them from lies? What about raising our children in truth and honesty?

Further, it is in my opinion that this ‘worship’ of Santa Claus (SC) is a form of idolatry. We have our children pleading with SC for gifts. Then they thank him for whatever gifts they receive. We have images of SC throughout our homes. We sing songs praising and even glorifying SC. Shouldn’t all praises, worship, glorifying, exalting be for the Most High, Creator of all things? Didn’t our Creator say that he doesn’t want his glory to be shared with others?

Parents, you work hard all year round to provide for your children. The Almighty gives you the life, strength, knowledge and wisdom to earn for your family, so how then can you tell your children that SC brought the gifts for them? Again, it takes away the glory from our Creator and gives it to another ‘being.’ Man can easily make something into a god and worship it. It is recorded throughout the books of history. I saw a local advertisement encouraging our children to write letters to SC in the North Pole and to be sure they post it by a certain date. I wonder how much it costs to send a letter to the North Pole? Our Guyanese children are in for a major disappointment because there is no snow here for this person to land his sled. Tsk Tsk Tsk.

What is the difference between an adult physically taking advantage of a six year old and an adult unnecessarily and intentionally deceiving a six year old to get them to behave in a certain way, for example, “Go to bed early because Santa knows when you are awake.” In both cases, are we not taking advantage of the innocence of that child?

A few years ago, in Australia, a teacher lost his job because he told his young class that there was no such thing as Santa Claus.
Just think about it.

Yours faithfully,
Montgomery Chester

    • Jeannie UNITED STATES says:

I also think we should stop lying to your children about God…but that will never happen.

    • Stacie UNITED STATES says:

Christmas is so much more than just Santa claus and the birth of Christ. Christmas is about family, love, sharing, making memories. Who cares if there is a santa claus or not? Are you saying that because you do not believe in Santa Claus you will not buy presents for your children. How selfish can you be? The real world is hard enough, and they will face it soon enough, don’t take away the magic and innocence of your children. It is bad enough the government took a hymnals from school, do parents have to take away from christmas too?

  2. Boa Vista BRAZIL says:

Three cheers for you Mr. Montgomery. You’re certainly right.

An honour to be in discussion with you. I often follow your letters. You are one of the persons who encourage persons to pen their views. Thank you.

However, my letter was not meant to anger souls but to encourage critical thinking. I do not hope to make enemies. Those little children should learn the TRUTH.

I am looking forward for you to pen you point of view, as one of our esteemed letter writers.

  6. zainno CANADA says:

Thank you MR. CHICHESTER for educating the masses. It seem as though in this day and age people are still not getting it that the whole santa claus thing is a business tatic. At the same time they are sending the wrong message to the young impressionable minds. Anyway my kids even the one as young as 3 knows that santa is fake. My time here in Canada I can remember many things qabout santa. Santa with bad breath, drunk santa, santa fondling kids etc. I know you would make alot of people mad, but right now I am your fan.

    • evileyes CANADA says:

OH you and your shariah laws….we all know you will love this…..

    • Monty Chester GUYANA says:

      Zainno,

Thank you. I am your fan as well.

I am laughing over the different types of Santas in Canada, Santa with bad breath..lol

  7. Irving Henry UNITED STATES says:

I agree 100% with Mr. Chester, my children are 7 & 8 and they know there is no such thing as Santa. Christmas has lost its significance and all we do is get caught up in the vestivities and forget about the true meaning. Like Mr. Chester asserted, why not tell the children that God is good and has blessed the family so they can by gift, instead of telling them this stupid tale of santa. And about those Christmas songs; where in Guyana do you see house with chimneys?

  8. M. Xiu Quan-Balgobind-Hackett UNITED KINGDOM says:

Lying about Santa Claus? What about the Creator, Most High and Heaven? At least there’s a real physcial North Pole that has been visited.

    • Monty Chester GUYANA says:

      Mr. Hackett,

Are you saying that there is no physical eveidence to shoe the existence of the creator?? Even scientist are now saying that there must be a CREATOR.

Just look around at this beautiful Earth and how our bodies are designed. By the way who do you think made the NORTH POLE? The Elves?

  9. evileyes CANADA says:

A few years ago, in Australia, a teacher lost his job because he told his young class that there was no such thing as Santa Claus says Montgomery Chester…
the teacher lost his job because he is down right STUPID to say such thing…..
So you better be good from now on and santa will give you a brain for christmas.

    • wondertee UNITED STATES says:

Ha, Ha, Ha, Good for you evileyes! This was my first good laugh for the day. You know I understand that children are innocent, however, in some cases when the existence of Santa Claus is being promoted in the home, it’s only a harmless form of “fantasizing”. I also believe that some parents (myself included) “advocate” the existence of Santa Claus to promote the quality of their child’s/children behavior – meanwhile, the child is anticipating Santa¢s arrival.
Yes Santa Claus is fictitious, however, the concept encourages some children to look forward to something special during the season, also, I¢m sure that most folks remind their children about the reason for the season – which is the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
In today¢s world it is imperative that children have something to look forward to, at least once a year.
I fantasize and I’m sure that you do also Mr. Chester, so go ahead and lighten up and allow the little ones to let their imagination run wild for a while. They do grow up and laugh about it; mine did.
Everyone be safe and be well! Happy Christ-mas!

    • Monty Chester GUYANA says:

      Evileyes,

DO u like being lied to? If our teachers cant tell us truth, who can? “If you stupify yourself, you will be stupid”

By the way I have a brain, given to me by the CREATOR. A brian that I can engage others in intellligent convo. SO no need for your Santa to bring one for me. But while you are at it, ask your Satan ..ummm err…Santa to brin you some Angeleyes, maybe then you will SEE things for what they are.

      Cheers

  10. dove UNITED STATES says:

Santa Clause is just a myth and have been for generation to generation. It is up to the family to emphasize what is valuable / important to thier children. Christmas and the Santa Clause thing is commercialized and is such a business strategy that the meaning has been lost.

Then again everyone have a choice and it is all about choices. Each person has the choice whether to celebrate or not celebrate, to believe or not believe, educate or not educate their children about Santa Clause. Religion is such a controversial topic that is hard to say how an individual should or should not behave / worship when it comes to their religion.

There is a lot difference when an adult takes physical advantage of a child than when an adult tell a child about santa Clause. One is a myth like a fairy tale and the other is a physical action. If there are any documented cases where a child / children has/ have been traumatized mentally by believing that Santa Clause exists and only to realize that he is not, then we have some serious issues at hand.

Is it all about lying and not telling the truth because show me the person who have never told a lie / untruth. We may call it a white lie, blue lie or what ever so as to justify or fit our situation. And sometimes we have to bend the truth when it comes to our children because we always like to protect our children from getting hurt. So what is the difference I ask myself.

But again with a topic as controversial as christmas this will bring all kinds of views and disagreement and the debate will go on and on and on and on…….. And this is great for we are all different people and we all have different view on different things. It is all respectable and I respect your comments and your views on the article above.

    • Monty Chester GUYANA says:

      Dove,

I respect what you just wrote. The respect is mutual.

You know some people here are not mature enough to handle different point of views. They resort to attacking me personally. TSK TSK TSK

Mice to hear your views on the matter.
