Dear Editor,

Your publication of Friday, December 12, 2008 carried a letter captioned ‘Poorly performing government institutions make life difficult for citizens.’ It included a reference to incomplete or incorrect records of NIS contributions.

We again take this opportunity to inform the public and the letter writer, in particular, that the responsibility for the provision of accurate information on the details of contribution payments being remitted to NIS lies with the employers.  Too many of them have been submitting inaccurate and incomplete contribution schedules which make it difficult to identify the employees on whose behalf they are paying and much time has been spent in revisiting the institutions to clarify these submissions and thereafter have the insured persons’ records properly updated.

We encourage employers to ensure that those with the responsibility for preparing the NIS contribution schedules do so with the accuracy, sufficiency and legibility required for the correct postings of these records at NIS.

Yours faithfully,
Dianne Lewis Baxter

  1. Andy UNITED STATES says:

The NIS needs to be audited by the Attorney General! There is no other government agency that has come under so much public scrutiny in its service to the nation like the NIS.

But despite its shaky performance and need to pay its customers/clients a bigger increase compatible with rising cost of living, it was forced to cough up a huge portion of its money to help finance the building of the Berbice Rver Bridge.

Imagine the government tells pensioners it will give them an increase in pension payments, then turns around and tells them the payments will be dependent on if the NIS has money. There has never been major NIS increases for those who long ago paid their dues to help build Guyana, but these same people must once again ‘pay more dues’ (by being denied major pension increases) to help build a bridge! There is no shame in the Jagdeo-led PPP administration.

Employers MUST provide accurate info about NIS contributions. So that I can get my benefits when they’re due.

  3. RONPKR UNITED STATES says:

NIS HAVE A DUTY TO THE CONTRIBUTORS, THEY SHOULD GIVE YEARLY UPDATE TO EACH ONE AND THE BUSINESS SO ALL CAN BE ON THE SAME PAGE, IN THE INTEREST OF TRANSPARENCY.

  4. FOR REAL UNITED STATES says:

Are you guys kidding or what? How and why would you tell the elderly that it depends on if the NIS has money they will get their money ?
Guyana is beyond help as I can observe now. What is wrong with this present Administration P.P.P./C ? Are you all out of your minds or may something more severe ? Give the seniors the money that is due to them along with the increase that is promised to them. The cost of living in Guyana is so high that the poor people cannot make ends meet and no one is concerned about their well being.
