Arson

Arson is suspected to be the cause of a fire which completly gutted this two-flat, five-bedroom building at Trinity Street, New Amsterdam around 2 am on Friday. The building, which was worth $16 million, was owned by Michael Ross who currently resides overseas. The owner’s relative who lived in a room at the back of the house was away at the time of the fire. Caretaker of the building, Kennard Dwarka of Nurseville Housing Scheme told Stabroek News that he got the news around 2.15 am. The fire tender arrived at the scene promptly and did a good job of containing the blaze but had difficulty accessing water. A neighbour’s house was scorched and three of his water tanks destroyed during the blaze. (Photo by Shabna Ullah)
