The Bank of Guyana on Tuesday unveiled a specially minted coin to commemorate the return of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta) to Guyana, its birthplace, and to highlight the oneness of the Caribbean.

Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh, Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport Dr Frank Anthony and Minister within the Ministry of Finance Jennifer Webster all witnessed the unveiling of the 25 gram coin minted with cupronickel.

The Carifesta logo and the Coat of Arms have been manually engraved on the faces of the coins. On Tuesday President Bharrat Jagdeo and Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, were the first to be presented with the coin which will be on sale from today for $3,800.
The bank’s governor, Lawrence Williams, said that they decided to create this special coin shortly after it was known that Guyana would be hosting Carifesta. He also encouraged all to visit the bank during business hours to view the collections of historical and modern-day coins and notes which are on display.
According to Anthony the coins and the Carifesta stamps launched on Monday will gain the same reputation as the Black Magenta which is Guyana’s most famous and valuable stamp. The coin will be one of Carifesta’s legacies, Anthony said.
