—to provide training, help the under-privileged
The First Assembly of God Church in Wortmanville yesterday opened a multi-million dollar building aimed at providing training, recreation and support programmes to empower mainly children, youths and the destitute to realise their potential so they can meaningfully contribute to society.
Generation Next, located at Lot 7 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, cost the church close to $100M to build and it is equipped with the facilities to offer technical and vocational skills training, information technology, career mentorship, recreational events, protocol training and fine arts training.
The three-storey building was declared open during a ceremony attended by a capacity crowd, with Minister of Human Services & Social Security, Priya Manickchand, being among the attendees.
Described as “multi-faceted” the new facility is intended to position beneficiaries for national and international careers and advance learning opportunities in order to enhance their economic viability.
It is hoped that the facility would provide high quality community programmes by trained and caring professionals, and enhance the talents, skills and abilities of children and youths through educational, recreational and skills programmes. Further, the aim is to assist youths achieve personal advancement through life-skills training and career mentorship, and enhance the recognition of the programmes offered through appropriate certification and accreditation.
The provision of practical support porgrammes to restore hope and dignity to marginalised and destitute adults and children is also on the list of objectives.
The building is equipped with state-of-the-art computer laboratories and an industrial kitchen for the preparation and delivery of hot meals to destitute schoolchildren and homeless persons, among other facilities.
The main target groups are males and females between the ages of 12 and 49 drawn from low income families, school drop-outs, unemployed youths, street children and youths seeking development from Wortmanville and neighbouring communities. Also targeted are marginalised adults and those seeking educational development, drawn from Wortmanville and neighbouring communities as well as institutions and organisations across Guyana.
It is hoped that though guidance, counselling and training these persons will overcome tough personal and family issues.
Construction of the building commenced on October 2, 2006 and was completed last month through the generous support of members of friends of the church, along with several fundraising events.
Excellent! Great! This is just a beginning. It’s my wish that this latest development snowballs into a total re-awakening of each and every one’s civic responsibility.
One would hope that the would be “child killers” will have a better alternative.

On a sour note, I’ll bet my bottom dollar that this article would not attract the loads of bloggers who love to pontificate on all the other negative stories – like Fineman’s funeral and the “wonderful” job the GPF is doing – being judge, jury and executioner.

totally agree with you malaika06, i got married in the same church and i did recall the paster at the time( pastor smith) mentioning the building of such a structure which i read eventually came to light(praise god) which is a good thing for the community CONGRATS to the pastor and congregation KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKS, ON MY SOAR NOTE, this is something positive so you will not hear from your usual bloggers they know themselves.

I am always suspicious when churches raise large amounts of money without accounting for the source. Where did the First Assemby church get such a sizable amount of money to complete this impressive project? Is it from legitimate sources or do I smell money laundering here?

I salute the pastor, board members and all those who contributed to this venture coming to fruition. It’s a positive step in arresting some of the social ills plaguing GUYANA and bringing some sense of decency, normalcy and purpose back into the lives of the unfortunate citizens & society at large. Society will surely benefit from some of the skills thought. May God continue to bless & strengthen you Pastor Smith so that you can continue to empower others through your works!!

Ten thousand miles begins with a single step,and it is good to see that the church has made that first step it is time now for other organisations to follow in this direction,having institutions of this nature to cater to those who are less fortunate is heartening and should be encouraged by both the Private sector and Government,I was told that Churches now have to pay for electricty in Guyana I know in the past this was not so, in a case such as this one The Government should revisit their decision on this issue and exempt this Church in particular from paying for electricty. This would bring about some measure of relief to the patrons and benefiecaries alike and may encourage persons who would like to follow suit. I hope now that persons who require these services that are being offered utilise this opportunity and in the same manner show their appreciation by taking care of the facilities that are being extended so that future generations could also benefit.

I was born to a different religion and converted to Cristianity. My DAD was a Pastor ( Praise GOD I KNOW THAT He is in HEAVEN ) the little that he got from his mechanic shop he built a Church for our village; it was so beautiful to see how many Alcoholics, Thieves and Mal-mannered, changed to be prominent citizens…………
My point is ……..it’s so rewarding to know that One/s without Earthly Riches give their little …..and …..can build multi-million dollar House of Worship that Anyone Godfearing ……will……. surely be Welcomed…
