Hot on the heels of a prisoner escaping from the Georgetown Public Hospital on Tuesday, another one has fled, this time from the New Amsterdam prison.
Troy Otto, 25, of 42 Swamp Street, Pouderoyen escaped from the prison some time between 4 am and 5.30 am yesterday after forcing apart the steel bars on the northern window of his cell and jumping into the prison yard.
Director of Prisons Dale Erskine told Stabroek News yesterday that Otto was discovered missing when a prison officer went to check on the inmates in the cell that Otto shared with two other prisoners. Erskine said a search was then launched for the man but he was not found. Otto was serving a three-year sentence for trafficking in narcotics as well as a two-year sentence for throwing a corrosive substance at someone.
The window in Otto’s cell faced the back of the prison and he must have made his exit through the back, Erskine said.
When asked how the man could have passed the security barriers, which include a high fence and prison officers who should have been on duty, Erskine said that investigations have already begun to determine how that could have occurred.
The prison director also said “sufficient officers” were supposed to be on duty at the time of the man’s escape.
Meanwhile, Erskine also told Stabroek News that there has been no further word on Joel Fraser, called Quincy London, who escaped from Ward B2 of the Georgetown Public Hospital sometime during the wee hours of Tuesday.
These two escapes are the latest in a long line, which have occurred while prisoners were both out and in prison cells. Quite a few have occurred while prisoners were being taken back to prison after making court appearances.

This man Dale dosen’t get it .Why does he not high tail himself out and give somebdy a chance who can be more effective. He seems to lack professional pride.
you dont get it I know the prison director personally and i worked with this guy and for him so dont question his ability to do his job the country going to sea in a basket and the government not hightailing come on where is the rational you ever worked in a prison doing twelve hour shifts for less than 80usd per month man get off these people backs.
Sheik, u r right, befor they joined this job, they were well informed of the pay, if they cannot preform as they should, they should get their ***** out of the job.
Oh boy here we go again, this is becoming a trend of prisioners escaping when they are in custody, who’s to be blamed for this. How come these guys just escape at will and no one knows, are they being helped to escape? Something is wrong with the system.
Nuttin ain’t wrong wid de system, amen-ra. It’s the people who running de system. Something wrang wid dem.
By now Dale Erskine should be so embarassed with this continuing prisoner-escape debacle, that the least thing he can do is RESIGN!!!
THe man is obviously sitting twiddling his thumbs that he’s ALWAYS available to the media to make some inane comment when these escapes happen, when he shld be buckled down with his staff and strategising ways to halt any recurrences.
Lemme break it down with this simple analogy.
A husband goes out every day in a week period, gets a job and then looses it. One right after the other. What you think the wife will tell him. Something wrong with the employers, hell no! She’ll tell him that something wrong with he (husband). She’ll tell him to check himself.
Darn hell, if this weren’t so serious, I’d say it was comical
Whenever there is an escape from lawful custody, regardless of the location, it is usually due to one of two reasons; someone did what he was NOT supposed to do or someone did NOT do what he was supposed to do. Mr. Erskine needs to “tighten up” on his supervisors who are required to make proper security inspection rounds inside and outside the facility. A significant part of a prison supervisor’s responsibilities is to ensure that the staff he or she supervises are properly doing the job they’re paid to do.
Well said Uncle Joe, but when the “pay” isn’t good, motivation fails & if the prisoners pay better who will stop a recipient from accepting?!?! Besides, the old decrepit facilities, lacking maintenance can’t hold a 4 yr. old if he wanted to leave so ………. there you have it.
DALE YOU NEED TO GO
” I want to break free, I want to break free for the first time, this time i know it’s for reall…..” Troy Otto sang as ge banged against the metal bars. The prison officers though the three inmates were having a party in the cell so they pulled out their stached bottles of rum and started to drink and danced to the banging and singing. The next morning when they were no longer intoxicated and cleaning up their vomits from the ground, only then they realised that Otto had actually broken free.
Please stay tuned for next week’s episode coming from Camp St.
Not only from Camt St..From Brickdam and mazaruni too eheheheheh…..
ROTFLMAO!!! You are a funny chap.
And the—Investigation–Continues — so as the world turns so are the days of our life……Dale plauezze stop talking to the press……..
Star boy strong!! Bending bars to break out…
Seriously this is getting ridiculous. this prison system is like a chain of guest houses… check in and check out at will.
OMG! How many more of these prison escapes do the average citizens have to put up with???? It has become an epidemic. I purpose that they repair the prisons and implement some sort of walk through process that would account for the prisoners at various time periods during the night and day. Erskine also needs to revisit the current accountability procedures and resolve any loopholes.
All those sleeping bats , that what the tax payers in guyana are paying them for to sleep and give the prisoners a chance to get away., such a shame
Seriously, are the people on duty being thoroughly investigated when these breakouts occur? There must be something going on when you consider the frequency with which prisoners are escaping. One is inclined to believe they are being “set free”.
