A trip to ‘A’ Field Sophia to drop off a ‘passenger’ turned out to be costly for a taxi driver after gunmen opened fire on him before escaping with a quantity and cash and jewellery.
Albert Narine sustained a gunshot wound to the left hand during the attack, which was perpetrated by three men inclusive of his ‘passenger’.
Police in a statement yesterday said they are investigating an armed robbery that occurred about 12:20 hours at ‘A’ Field, Sophia, during which Narine was attacked and robbed by three men, two of whom were armed with handguns. He was shot and injured in the process.
Stabroek News understands that one of the men hired the taxi at Regent and Camp streets to be dropped off at a location in `A’ Field, Sophia. According to the release, upon arrival in the area, the passenger went into a shop where he was joined by two other men. Upon observing this, Narine became suspicious and attempted to drive away. However, the men discharged rounds at him, one of which struck him on his left hand.
He was then robbed of jewellery, two cell phones and $27,000 after which the men escaped.
Narine has been admitted to the Georgetown Hospital, the release added.

He was lucky, but not smart,I’m afraid that taxi drivers will have to stop doing the Sophia run,it is too risky not worth it,after the many times that taxi drivers have been attacked in that area, the innocent will suffer because of the actions of these criminals, that is an extremely rough area,it is like nowhere else in Guyana…I would walk through Buxton or Agricola ten times rather than go into Sophia!!!
Dont be ridiculous. What happens in an instance where a woman in sophia needs to go to the hospital to get a baby and no taxis want to go in there….Guyanese people live in Sophia (including taxi drivers).
I have no problem going there. you just have to be smart about the way you move.
Why bro Guy!! don’t make Sandman hear ya, because he gon pull ya down, and demand Respect..
Hire car drivers, the robbery of one, is like all, get intelligence reports, and hunt down the criminals/perpetrator/s and let them pay for their crimes.
I know that times is hard in guyana and the need to make money but i am sorry i dont think i would work as a taxi driver in that crazy place muchless to take people is places in sophia,i would have had to miss a couple of days meal before i go there ,these people need to think not only that he is shot he could have lost his life just like that .
Why do people need two cell phones in Guyana. Just wondering. Looks as though the honest folks that’s trying to make a living is getting a very hard time doing so. The Govt. should step up to the plate and provide some sort of help towards victims of crime, especially if handicapped.
This place is another one of the crime spree bandit infested areas that dot the coast of Guyana. Businesses should be conducted there at the owner’s risk.
