- murders skyrocket 36%
The murder rate has shot up by 36% this year compared with the same period last year, a figure inflated by the mass killings at Lusignan, Bartica and Lindo Creek, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said yesterday.
Persaud, presenting crime statistics for the year, reported a 9% increase in serious crimes, with murder leading the way. There were 2,395 serious crimes this year, compared with 2,203 last year.
Figures show that from January 1 to October 31, 2008, there were 135 murders, while for the corresponding period last year there were 99, an increase on 36%. The 2008 figure includes the death toll of 31, from the Lusignan, Bartica and Lindo Creek bloodbaths.
Forty of the murders recorded this year were carried out execution-style; 10 occurred during robberies; 21 were of a domestic nature; 40 occurred as a result of disorderly conduct; 21 are unknown; and three of the cases occurred under unknown circumstances.
‘E&F’ Division had the highest number of execution-style killings with 20, including the Bartica and Lindo Creek killings; followed by ‘C’ Division with 13, including the Lusignan massacre. ‘E&F’ Division has the highest murder rate overall.
Persaud also reported a 33% increase in armed robberies, with 252 cases for this year compared to 189 last year. Robbery involving the use of firearms was also prevalent during this year, up from 580 to 700, a 21% increase.
Persaud did, however, report a decrease in rapes, with 50 cases this year, compared with 70 last year, representing a 28% decrease. Burglaries were also down, with 52 this year, compared with 87 for 2007, a 40% decrease.
There has also been a decrease in the number of firearms seized this year. According to Persaud, 126 were seized so far as compared to 130 last year, with ‘A’ Division taking in 54 firearms, and ‘E&F’ Division, 35.
The Crime Chief stated that the force continues to face numerous challenges. These include gangs; the influx of tourists; organised crime-drug and firearm trafficking; illegal firearms in society, including missing army AK-47s; the expansion of economic activity in the interior; and the increase of economic and social activities, particularly in the city. However, Persaud said strategies such as training, intelligence-gathering, investigations, collaboration and intelligence-led operations will be used to tackle the challenges.

It is conspicuously that obvious. Everyday blood seems to be washing closer and closer to my doorstep. One day when I no longer leave my fingerprints on these pages in book of blog, you must know that they have visited my domicile and carted off my few valuables and left the shell of my body to match the emptiness of my penny bank.
What are you talking about John?………………..hehehehehehhe
WHAT A WISHFUL WISH….GOOD LUCK
The Crime Chief Seelall Persaud is not a very wise man and i can say this from my encounters i had with this man. He should be ashamed to mention or state that crime rates are up when he is the man responsible for over seeing the crime division in the police force. It therefore means that he is not doing a good job.
There aren’t any influx of tourists in Guyana……has he gone bananas??The word ‘Terrorism’ can only be used in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan where there are suicide bombers and a constant wave of gun related violence everyday.
Have he ever thought that if Guyana had possessed these type of individuals what would have really happen in this country???
WHY DONT YOU APPLY FOR THE JOB? AND FYI, WE DO HAVE TERROIST IN GUYANA WHER ONE WAS RECENTLY CHARGE.
I’m on your tacons again Sandman! ya see that everything is transparent and true, not like them burnamite years when everything was convenient reports/lies.
C,mon Sandy, the guy is doing his job and he has the stats . Do you want him to juggle the facts to please some of the people.
what do you called these deportee criminals who wants to create havoc on our society. it’s time that the govt used satellite tracking device on all criminal deportees, provided by the US where they came from.
i bet the crime rate will reduce to a safe and acceptable level that it once was.
why claim you do care about burnham era, when your comments are bias and two; you are not backing a democratic government, who the hell can rule guyana better that the PPPC, if you give me the answer i may think of buying you lunch.
SF once again the “depth” of your words exposes your thinking
Dem bannus gat yu in calm.
Without the three massacres, there was still a rise in the crime rate, with new methods to be implied to get information, would surely halt/slowdown crimes in 2009.
Crime wil always be on the rise, if no jobs and opportunities are available to the youths, and as long we have open borders, drugs and guns would continue to come in the country.
Amen-Ra I think you need to rewrite this comment in bold caps so everyone could see. Unless there are viable means of income earning crime WILL rise. We all know that there will always be bums but the crime rate will decrease once people can afford to earn a living, pay their bills & live comfortably & freely. It’s a government issue but I guess some will say that the government cannot do anything. To them I will say that the government & its ‘follicies’ (policies) have failed us & ought to relinquish their position to an interim body who will be chosen by referendum & allowed to rule until the next general elections.
Nothing surprising about this. We all know the madness going on in Guyana! The use of statistics is just illustrating it more. Just hope the JS continues tackling criminal element!
KBOS.VIPFLYIER_YYZ
KBOS you know i did not even bother to read this report, I am just going over the blogs instead.
It’s not rocket science that crime is on the rise so who need the stats?……………….lol
Can Mr Crime Chief bring us up to date with the Lindo Creek Massacre,Death in the Brickdam Lock-ups,Barrel with Guns in Regent Street,.What about those hard working detectives, are you promoting them?.Hope you are strengthening you under-cover operations?.
Big D, with reference to those crimes you mentioned :investigations are continuing” They will be for as long as it takes for people like you & me to forget they ever happened. Have you ever wondered what happened to Frankie (a key man in the Regent St gun find)? Has anyone questioned his relatives about any recent communications with him? Guyana is full of corruption, fraud & criminal activity in spheres you’ll never imagine. The stats provided are just a confirmation of the fact that where criminals rule criminality will prevail.
in the face of this functionary’s failure are the people who called for Dale Erskine’s resignation going to ask for his?in the crime chief’s case he has hands on and day to to day control with what goes on under his watch, with more resources at hand and yet the results are poor as sandhurst said he receives a big fat salary at the end of the month and all the perks that goes with the job, what does have to show?
some friends of mine want to visit Guyana with me next month, what should I do? Tell them the truth and facts about Guyana, or let them discover, and act surprised when certain things happen!
Please, don’t take them. If you are brave enough to go to Guyana, fine. But for the love of God, leave your friends out of it. You will, among other things, be embarrassing yourself. Take them to St. Lucia. I love my country, but I won’t take anyone there, at this time.
Take them, they may still have a good time. And plus there are other Brazilians, in GT. Guyana may not be perfect but it is still our MOTHER LAND. And to you I say, ENJOY your vacation.
Crime up for 2008
who needs the stats????
just do what you have to do to protect the people and tell us what you intend on doing to stop this scourage….then show the proof…….
…and guess what? Christmas is coming, pocket books are getting fat…Guyanese will have to put a few pennies in the thiefmen’s hat…More crime to come…stay tuned!!!
I say reimplement a program like the Guyana National Service…it will take some of our youth of the streets and inspire them to become productive members of society.
It’s either that or build more jails and waste taxpayers money to keep the blithes locked up and well fed.
