A 24-year-old mother of two was electrocuted around 2 pm yesterday while reconnecting her refrigerator.
Juliet Mohabir of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, who would have celebrated her third wedding anniversary today, met her demise after she tried to connect the refrigerator plug while her hands and a part of her clothing were wet.
After receiving the electrical shock she was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mohabir’s sister-in-law, Premwattie “Delly” Sookdeo said that the fridge was unplugged to be cleaned and that two hours later Juliet, who was washing dishes decided to go and “plug it in.”
She said that they would normally take off the main switch before reconnecting the fridge but Mohabir did not want to go all the way upstairs to do so.
According to Sookdeo, she tried to stop Juliet from connecting the plug saying, “Girl, wait leh me see wah you doing; you can’t fit in the corner there to do it properly, you too fat Leh me plug it in.”
However, Mohabir insisted that she could handle it and seconds later she fell to the ground. Sookdeo said she also started to scream, “Run Delly, me gon dead, run and cut off the main switch.”
Mohabir’s mother-in-law, Kuntie “Zeena” Sookdeo said she was standing on the “landing when me hear them screaming and me run down to see what happen.” Kuntie, who was inconsolable when this newspaper visited, said that her daughter told her to take off the main switch but in the haste and her confused state she almost fell before she finally reached the switch.
Meanwhile, Premwattie said she lifted the injured woman out of the kitchen and started to “rub she up with methylated and limacol.”
She also tried to contact the woman’s husband, Looknauth Sookdeo, who works at Solid Gold Jewellery in the village, but his phone rang out. In tears, the husband told this newspaper that just after 2 pm two of his friends gave him the news that his wife got “shock.”
He hurried home on his bicycle and was hoping that it was nothing serious but when he got there he saw his wife lying on the ground. He immediately hired a bus and rushed her to the hospital.
He said he and his wife were looking forward to celebrating their wedding anniversary today but instead he is preparing for her funeral.
Today her parents, Karramchand and Narda, who reside next door, would have also been celebrating their birthdays but they too would be mourning on their special day.
The young mother is survived by her parents, siblings, husband and her daughter, Reshme who will be two years old tomorrow and her son Ganesh, who will celebrate his first birthday in December.
Premwattie and Kuntie lamented that Juliet was a nice and quiet person and said they got along well. They regretted that she met such a tragic end.

Her sudden death was a result of laziness and being “hard ears” Sometimes we need to put of self beliefs aside and listen to someone who knows….
OUT OF BOUNDS- OUT OF BOUNDS,,,,This young woman lost her life and that is what you got to say, I expect better from you, you mentioned sometime back that you visited Westpoint,,,,HONOR, Go back and rewrite your comment and give the family your condolences man. Soldiers don’t go out like this…. A suggestion can be made to install a switch between the main power supply and the appliance, so that you would not have to “UNPLUG” to defrost or stop a surge, if you cannot afford a surge supressor. My condolences goes out to the entire family.
oh c’om on sandhurst, at least send a condolence to the bereaved husband, man.
Sandhurst, you are one impulsive cat guy.
Have you ever heard of fate??????????????
Adds insult to death, what kind of heart!! not cultured, poor fellow!!
i agree with you lindenbanna this is a tragic accident , it could have happened to anyone. sandhurst do you always take advice. my condolence to the family
thank God that i am alive and can celebrate my 24 birthday today, my condolences goes out to the entire family.I dont find nothing wrong with what Sandhurst First said, its just how he feels and that the way he express his self , its just a firm word of reality he is trying to put out. So you guys get off his back , that how military guys think and act.
When someone dies we should put our judgments aside and empathize; ask GOD to grant them peace and rest as they make their final journey. We all make mistakes, therefore who are we to judge this woman’s actions?
You ought to be ashamed of yourself with your statement, Sandhurst
Very childish, I thought you were matured, I guess not.
It was lack of basic do’s and donts that caused this.
How many people knows that you dont mix water, wet, & electric???
I say it was a tragic accident.
I usually see you try to write to be the first one on the line, thats OK , just think first man.
Clutch in before you put yu finger , and your brain in gear to the computer.
See you tomorrow as usual.
No hard feelings, we jus blogging.
You shoud have a heart SandHurst, someone just died and that is all you can say? Your sympathies would have been appreciated in this regard. We are like a family here with different views and I am sure we all regret the passing of the young mother and wife. You are way out of line on this one.
SandHurst. Much respect. It takes a man to admit when he screws up. You have been demonstrating a lot of maturity. It shows that you are putting the hurt and bitterness aside. You are developing to be the fine young man you were raised to be. My sympathy to the family. She was indeed “hard ears.”
SandHurst, it takes a real man to admit when he makes a mistake. I respect you for that man.
ONE this women is my aunt and is straight blood to me. TWO none of you here can say that you havent made a simple mistake that has either hurt you in some way cause of carelessness. Show some respect. she wasnt being lazy she was cleaning her house. Sometimes your forget to do something. in this case my aunt lost her life. She left this world, she left her husband and her two kids who will have to live in this world with no mother. So dont go as say something hatefull and as disrespectful. Her family can read what you say so dont run your mouth like you know this person. There are no excuses for ingnorance. You wouldnt want to hear anyone say something like that about you or your family if that happened to you or them.
so insensitive!
Oh this is so sad…..another person electrocuted,it happens in just a split second, this young woman had her whole life in front of her, instead of happiness at this time of the year for this family it will now be remembered as a sad time for them,my deepest sympathies to this family on their loss!!
what a sad story……if she han listen to her sister-in-law she would have been a live today…when we try to do or make shot cut we pay dearly…..my heart goes out to this family…be strong god will see you all true this time may her soul r.i.p…
I do not believe some of these young people know basic safety rules.
If you’re wet ,your hands are wet, or you stand in water you cannot handle any electrical outlets or connect anything electrical. That’s a No No.You could be electrocuted. Its is sad that this had to happen, I do hope people will pay heed.
My sympathy to the family.
Birdman, i agree with you but i have this to tell you… i, myself ia a victim of narely being electrocuted back in 1996. I was prepared, had on helmet, booths, gloves & my cous & i were taking down our externa antennae toput a bigger one, i was on a zinc shed, my cous was on the roof, the 13800 power line was right over our his head, just when we thought we were thru a swarm of african bees was passing & it was right over my cous head, he screamed, i looked up & he dropped the iron pole & it got stucked on top of the power line [13,800 votls] &he slid down the roof to the shed that i was on at that time i had the pole resting on my shoulder…BOY O BOY U dont want me to tell u wht happened next.. i couldnt loose off of the pole, it was a severe, brutal unforgetable experience i had… i was only able to let go of the pole after i BLEW 2 huge transformers from 2 other districts & that reduced the power & i was able to let go… i was unconscious for about 20 mins. the zinc shed has electricity because the pole was still resting on the power line onto the zinc shed… i still have scars in my hands, toes, bottom of my feet & belly…. the point is WHEN U TIME REACH FU DEAD, U GAT TO GO BROTHER! IT HAD TO HAPPEN THAT WAY….. my condolences to the family… birthdays, anniversaries will never be tha same for the family…
We don’t need to blame the young mother for what happened here. There could be several reasons for this. First of all she was not the only one who was electrocuted recently. There may be something wrong with the plug from the fridge or the receptacle, also the Standards Department need to inspect some of the equipment entering Guyana to ensure they meet International standards. They also need to inspect these transformers GPL is contracting for to ensure they are doing the job they are supposed to do. It takes a lot of current to kill someone like that. Something is wrong that needs fixing.
This is sooo sad..my sympathy to the families…
Such a tradgedy . I am really sorry to hear about this incident. my sincere condolences to the family.
So sad, that young woman had to loose her life for such a simple mishap. There is no need to unplug the refrigerator. It can be switch off from inside the unit.
You are assuming a lot here.
What a sad sad story!! Thoes poor kids and her husband; may God bless this family, and take care of her kids.
Very sad for the whole family, the husband is surely devastated.
My heartfelt sympathy to the family.
Sad story another life taken, condolences to the family, and may her sould rest in peace.
