Five charged with murder
The five men, who were held over the death of 35-year-old Rickford Barker, were yesterday charged with his murder.
Yesterday, three of the men – Rupert Douglas, Ryan Chung and Louie Dublin – appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Providence Magistrate’s Court and were remanded to prison. They will return to Court on December 4.
Meanwhile, arrest warrants have been issued for the two other men – Samuel Junior Bobb and Walter Settle.
Barker’s battered body was discovered in a cemetery at Soesdyke on Saturday morning. Reports reaching Stabroek News were that some time during last Friday night, residents caught Barker, an ex-convict, attempting to break into a shop in the area.
The man was then subjected to a merciless beating by residents, who after realizing that he was dead, dumped the body in a nearby cemetery and covered it with a piece of board.

I was born and raised in Berbice then moved to Soesdyke with my father
It is sad to see what Guyana have become and it is not the country it is the people that make it bad . Jehovah put the governments in place to govern but people do not look past the barriors the rich get richer and the poor get poorer .
Plane and simple it sucks .
Well said
i also lives on the soesdyke linden highway not far from soesdyke gone r the good days in that area when we all uses to live as one .miss decunha if you read this article i think myself and your father uses to work for the government at the same time
My dad was Allan De Cunha . And my uncles was also living there driving the big green truck reply my email address is deb-201@hotmail.com
As for that situation with the killing it is sad .But that it the system we are living in.
Regardless if he is a thief, 5 men have no right to beat him to death. They are not even supposed to treat an animal like this. They must be punished for their crime. They have nothing else better to do. JAIL TIME.
I agree with you . But no one seems to care any more .
i agree with you, Birdman. They has no right to take the law into their hands. The must face the consequences for what they have done. He is wrong to steal but they are wrong to kill him. Why does the country has the judicial system? It is for that purpose. People need to know their position and places in society.
I remember an incident where a thief went to Plaisance & ripped some earrings from a girl’s ears near the market. The entire village beat him then the cops took him to Sparendaam Police station & left him in a cell to succomb to his injuries. This was in the late 70’s early 80’s. Thieves must & will be taught a lesson, if they are caught during this current economic crunch when people are STRUGGLING for survival ……………….. well, I sorry fuh dem
We do not have the right to take a life regardless of what .
This is good news, they would have something to think about in prison ,who do they think they are taking the law into their own hands
You go girl . Hope they get what is due them indeed . We all have a family . Some people make bad choices in life . And the system does make it hard on the people .
A thief and a murderer is separated by a very very thin line. Someone would have gotten hurt if he had gained entry into the shop. Ya’ll feel sorry for him. What about the victims of the crimes of the likes of these.
Vigilante justice was served. De right man got he dose.
so you support lynch mob violence? Will you confess to that on an official form if they ever ask you? They have ways of finding out you know.
i’m glad they are caught, and i hope justice will be served.
We who live abroad have no idea what goes on on a day to day basic back home.
Any one that want to be a thiefman gets whats coming to them if that means death so be it people are fedup you work hard for what you have they can do the same.
Amen to that Wallace
I’ve seen a man falsely accused of stealing and almost beaten to death at Port Mourant last year if me, my wife and a passing busload of passengers hadn’t intervened.
Beware of what you support it can come back to haunt you.
Soesdyke is still a pleasant and close knitted community. Moved there when I was only nine years old. Unfortunate death for Rickford Barker.
well said wallace ford these socal guyanese sit in there apartment/house in (north america )and runup their mouth and not having a clue with what is going on in guyana if was the other way around .a thief is always a thief and if he had to take a life to get what he want he whould do just that so he deserve just what he get u have to live in it to realy feel it things are very tuff in guyana boht for the hard working and the thiefman. but after just being realeas from jaill he should have cool .
Law and order have been missing from our country for many years. Citizens are taking advantage of each other and the so call democratic PPP Government is missing in action. Free and Fair election does not equate to a progressive and effective Government.
The first reponsibility of the Guyanese Government is to protect its Citizens. What is the record of this administration? I am sorry for the lost of life and the destruction of those who have committed this crime. Many families will be affected by this sad incident. Where is the Police who should have prevented this and what has the PPP Government done to stop crime in our country. The PPP does not have the support of the Army and the Police Force, how can they maintain law and order?
