“Ow nah madam, give meh lil community service nah man,” a man who allegedly stole two cases of empty bottles beseeched Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin yesterday.
Terry Johnson of Fourth Street, La Penitence, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on November 15 at Fourth Street, La Penitence Johnson stole two cases of drink bottles worth $2,000, property of Mahendra Balram.
Johnson told the magistrate that he wanted community service or “something like that” because he couldn’t manage the “hassle of moving from one courtroom to the other”. However, he was placed on $15,000 bail.
The accused will have to appear in Court One on December 3.

Thanks for the reply. It makes good sense and enlightens me to some extent of reasons for actions taken by the police and judiciary. However, I am still wondering what would be the case if a murder accused is in custody and the 72 hour limitation is fast approaching. Would s/he be let go on station bail or would bail be set so high that the money could not be raised, and then what???

Let me start out by saing stealing is never a goog thing ! But to give a man such a high bail,is very lopsided,when there are hard core criminals getting what I would consider a slap on the wrist, The fact that a case or two of sweet drink bottles are worth $ 2000! is ludacrous. Poor man I hope he gets community service indeed! what will jail do for the one whom the bottles were taken from?
Never feel sorry for a thief just like never feel sorry for a mouse, they will destroy your house for no reason, a thief will kill you in your own house.
Leh de man do some community service picking up empty bottles around de place and also help out with the cleaning of the cemetery and the brickdam lockups
With all the crimes that’s going on in Guyana, and people getting a slap on the wrist, this one is for the books, I say for his community service he should get two years, of hard labour and start cleaning up the city, from the photos I’ve seen Georgetown needs a good cleaning. If I were the judge, he would have to start at 4am and finish at 10 pm, with just time to eat, & sleep and nothing else. It seems every new day a new crime is committed, what’s wrong with these people.
