– says spurned boyfriend had vowed revenge
With a bullet lodged close to her spinal cord, Sophia Pitman’s relatives said she will have to seek treatment overseas.
Pitman, who was shot in the chest by an ex-boyfriend, was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s open ward yesterday, following an x-ray. But she is still in pain and more fluid is being drained from her body. Doctors have ruled out surgery here for the woman, saying that she faces paralysis.
Pitman, 22, of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was in a much better spirits when she spoke with Stabroek News yesterday but said she wants to go home and be with her child and relatives. When this newspaper saw her the previous day, she was teary-eyed and could only manage a few muffled words from under an oxygen mask.
Relatives told Stabroek News yesterday that they haven’t been able to gather much information from the nurses in the ward about Pitman’s condition. They were told to return the next morning to see the doctor. They said they have been informed that the bullet is close to her spine and that she will have to seek medical attention overseas.
As she sat on her hospital bed, Pitman spoke of the shooting and the welling up of the jealousy and anger that led to it. She said she was on her way to her mother’s Robb Street home to pick up her three-year-old daughter when the man (name given) walked up to her and while holding onto her said: “So yuh get new man now? Yuh family find somebody else for yuh?” This occurred at the corner of Robb and Cummings streets around 8 pm.
Pitman said the man then told her, “let me and you play a game,” and pulled out a gun. She said he told her it contained two bullets; one for her and the other for him. Before she could react, she said, he had placed the weapon under her right breast. She said she then saw something like lightning but didn’t hear a gunshot.
She fell to the ground, bleeding from her nose and her 25-year-old ex then exclaimed, “Sophia where yuh get shoot? In yuh belly? Oh $#!# I gotta get out of here!”
He ran off, and she managed to get up, she said, but only managed to cover a short distance. The young woman said she then saw “a junkie” and begged him to stop a car for her. A car later stopped and took her to Georgetown Public Hospital and according to Pitman she was conscious throughout.
Reflecting on her ill-fated relationship with the man, Pitman said they were together for four years but things changed when they went to work in the interior with her relatives. She said she never expected it would reach a point where she would be seriously injured.
They moved to the interior after the man had a falling out with his mother, Pitman said, but after they got there her relatives did not approve of the man and they told him to leave. Pitman said she decided to stay and her decision angered him and he vowed to take revenge. This was early last year.
Pitman finally returned to the city and in February of this year, she said, the man chopped her on one of her hands. Asked if he had ever been abusive before that day, she said no, adding that he was “always a nice person”. However, after he chopped her, she said, showing this newspaper the scars on her hand, she made a decision to end the relationship, angering him even more.
She later found somebody else.
Pitman said that persons close to the man have said that he had fled to Linden but she is unsure if he has relatives living there.
Asked why the man would have reached the point where he wanted her dead, she responded, “Is because I move on with my life and tek somebody else.”

what a selfish b???????, did not even take her to the hospital, however prison awaits him.
sad story but would u guys be setting up a account or phone number for donations? please let mr now
Good point i will also like to know where i can assist in send some funds for tkis young lady.
Once chopped, now almost fatally shot, so much women are abused by their husband/cowards, when would those woman abuse laws be revised and stiffer penalties be administered. Probably when there’s no woman left..
A delicate operation to remove the bullet near her spinal cord, but with state of the art equipment, and expert in the field abroad, it would be a success…
Hope the ex is soon caught and jailed!
I said and I am saying again..these women contribute to their brutality..if they take a stance for the first abuse then it will never go on..These men beat them and then apoligised and they continue with them. My belief and records shows that as soon as a man hits a woman once and she accepts it and continue in that relationship..it is a series to come and that is when it ends up like this. These women needs to be more open, to share their experiences with others do not be ashamed…speeeeeak out….
I hope she do get the treatment that she need to save her life, and i hope her ex is caught, from her story this man is sick and need to be off the streets.
Yeah talkout she will need donations for real. Ting nah easy deh suh. May she have a speedy recovery & I pray her demonoid ex-boyfriend receives his just deserves.
Hey guys, I know many of you gona want to kill me for this view!!
every one is on the woman’s side, but you know, it is not easy to be rejected by the other family and things of such. Now, please do not think I am saying he was right to shoot her and chop her, but as I see this, this guy was not only rejected by this girl’s family, but by her also. Indeed he need to be thought a lesson, but would like to hear his side of the story first.
but that still don’t make it right.
Roger, I know what you mean bro, but men have to be strong. Those parents that rip their sons and daughters out of loving relationships for the sake of pride and social status would have to answer to God. Family can play a major role in relationships. It is a topic that can go on and on. Rejection makes a man a better person in the end. After all, nothing in the life is to keep.

What side if the story. The point is that he caused harm to her. So what if her family did not like him, from the article his family did not agree with him either… wrong is wrong.. and he is wrong…
He need to learn to deal with rejection. Rejection is a part of life. Anyway he would have a lot of time to reflect and such.
OMG!!!, her exboyfriend is a “lunatic”,GPF HAS TO FIND THIS MAN VERY QUICK!if not he will go about doing that to someone else again, not good at all………i would like to give a donation to this young woman to help her seek overseas treatment…….SN YOU COULD OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT SO THAT MONEY CAN GO TO HELP OUT!!!!!!!.
This man epitomises a coward and an excuse for human kind. When he is found the other bullet that he said was for him should be used successfully. I hope this young mother recovers and is able to take care of her child.
I see in Sophia a human side, I see in Sophia a child of 2 parents and a sister, I see in Sophia another woman that an injustice was perpetuated against. Unlike us men, women have very limited options when it comes to fighting back against injustices. Only on a few occasions women are known to retaliate against their attackers. This is where the law comes in. It is said that their strength lies at their mouth, Surprisingly, it is the same mouth that can utter soft and sweet words to comfort and encourage men. Men are known to remember voices and sounds of women more than they do for other men, whether it is a laugh or a cry; it is just the way we were made.
Having said this, I wish Sophia a successful operation. I can guarantee you that once it is over, Sophia would not be the same person in regards of the way she sees others. She would probably want to take a second look at her attacker; a man with whom she once shared her life and contributed to his happiness.

I am so sick and tired of what is going on in guyana i think the laws should be changed regarding the abuse of women. The govt should step in and re write the laws so that women can be protected from such crimes. it is not today that women in guyana have been abuse this was happening for the last 30 years and the govt allows the culprit to escape or just give them a slap on the wrist. Shame on the Govt that countinue to do nothing about this . Women group should come together and speak out against this
