Rena Mohamed, 26, of 80 Second Street, Alexander Village appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with simple larceny. She pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

Mohamed admitted that between November 17 and 25 she stole 12 ounces of raw gold worth $2 million from her employer Ganesh Seeram.
According to the prosecution, Mohamed sold the gold and purchased a number of items with the money.
On November 17, Seeram placed the gold in his prayer room and left his home. He returned on November 25 and discovered the gold missing. A report was made to the police who later questioned the maid. Mohamed confessed to the police that she’d stolen the gold and was later charged, the prosecution said.

“My boyfriend pushed me in it,” Mohamed told the court. “Because he wanted the money… I don’t know how much money he wanted or what he wanted it for,” the distressed woman said.

When asked by the magistrate what she’d done with the money Mohamed informed the court that she purchased a number of household appliances. Further, she said that she had only been working with Seeram for one month. “I only got $32,000 left back from the money,” she said.

The magistrate informed Mohamed that the offence carried up to three years imprisonment but she would only give her 18 months.

The owner of the raw gold should be investigated also since he should have some permit to have such quantity of raw gold in his personal posession ,is he the Guyana gold board?. Raw gold is an illegal comodotity in the hands of private citizens . I belive this maid is no fool she maybe think and know that the employer might find himself in trouble if he reported the matter .However he did because I am sure he uses his links within the law enforcement . My question is how did the employer aquired 12 ounces of raw gold?

  10. Debbie CANADA says:

Rena Mohamed says “her boyfriend pushed her to steal.” The fact is ,she had a choice. She could have said NO , but she choose to do the crime. She was the one who spent the money anway, she has a new fridge, stove, microwave and blender. I hope the judge ordered the police to retrieve the stolen items to be returned to Mr.Seeram in lieu of his $2million. Also the remaining $34,000. should be returned to Mr.Seeram. Such a pity she messed up her life by being greedy for materialistic stuff and now has to go to jail for it.
