—day’s takings missing
A 68-year-old businessman was found dead in his Parika, East Bank Essequibo home yesterday morning and it is believed that he had been strangled.
Dead is Brandis Roberts of Parika Highway. The dead man, who owned a gas station, was found with his hands tied behind his back and a pair of pants tied around his face, covering his mouth, police said. Jewellery that Roberts was wearing at the time, his cellular phone and keys were intact, relatives said.
Police, in a statement said that they were investigating the suspected murder of Roberts, whose body was discovered at his home at about 7.30 yesterday morning. The dead man’s nephew, Carl Prowell told Stabroek News that his uncle was killed some time between 6.30pm on Saturday and 7am yesterday. He stated that Roberts was last seen when he left the gas station for home at about 6.30pm on Saturday. He had a bag with the day’s sales and this was missing, Prowell said, though jewellery that the man was wearing, his cellular phone and keys were untouched.
Prowell said that his uncle usually left the gas station with the money.
Roberts’ body was discovered by his brother, Winsley, who went to check on him after he did not turn up at the gas station and calls to his cellular phone went unanswered. The building was unlocked and the body was lying on floor of the kitchen, located in the bottom flat of the two-storey building, Prowell said. He declared that his uncle had a gun, but they had not located it and it is uncertain if the bandits had taken it.
After the discovery, the police were alerted and the body was taken to the mortuary. The home, where Roberts lived alone, was sealed by the police yesterday.
Roberts and Winsley had operated the gas station, located not far from his home for over 20 years. It is not that first time that Roberts was robbed, Prowell related. He stated that earlier this year, bandits had robbed his uncle of $2.5M but nothing had ever come of the matter. “This action tek he life,” he said. Neighbours did not recall hearing anything and several persons were questioned as police investigated the matter.
The gas station was closed yesterday and persons in the area expressed shock at Roberts’s death. He leaves to mourn his brother, a daughter and other relatives. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted today.

well once again another business man is dead and as usual the police are investigating, well let me ask president JAGDEO a question you comes too the U.S.A alot have you ever seen a police officer with out a GUN well every cop in GUYANA needs to carry a fire arm, i live in NEW YORK and i have never saw a cop with out a GUN so let every cop carry a GUN whiles he or she is on duty my AND THE POLICE DIFINITLY NEED A BETTER SALARY PRESIDENT.
I took my driving test in New York and the policeman in charge of the driving test WAS WEARING A GUN!
If I can add, PEAZZIE CHARLIE the Guyanese forces need a mass burning of the current bullet-proof vests and anti-AK47 vests provided…….. immediately.
oh yea!!!! ….give all the police guns….u dont know what y r asking ….the police here r like kids with toys…..more deaths …..attacked the police with a cutlass, knife, broken bottle….rent de guns out…. blackmail….not to mention wives and girlfriends who may incur their displeasure at some point…..some of the most cruel, uncoth and uncaring r in the GPF….here aint the USA….training & maturity is what matters!!!!
CAN YOU DEMAND MORE PAY OR PENSION FROM THE U S GOVT..?SOME OF YOU BELIEVE THAT THE U S IS GUYANA OR GUYANA IS THE U S
that is all the good news coming out from guyana every day is killing so sad it realy make me feel sick how meany more.so sad.
All my sympathies to the family. But it seems very fishy. They Should take a good look at whom are close to him, like his business partner for example.
I will wait a see if the investigaton goes my way.
Leaving a locked-up shop with the day’s takings every-day is asking for trouble.
The moving of cash should always be unpredictable.
Especially these days in Guyana.
Let us hope other businessmen learn to be more imaginative about how they handle cash from day to day.
Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat……….
Fishy Indeed. What is described as a “bandit” in Guyana kills differently. The word rolled a bit easily off the nephew’s tongue.
pattern of killing is not the same, these are neighbour hood tugs out for the days taking.
my sympathies to the family!
fishy! look at the ppl who will benefit after he dies, who will inherit the property… the motive may very well be about the $$$$ or someone was tracing him, just grab teh gun& $$ & go… was there pool of blood in the kitchen where he died? was he killed elsewhere & places in his home???
fishy to me..
condolences to the family.
are you suggesting that the police should try crime solving?
bite your tongue
Well look what just happened in Mumbai, India. Would you blame the Government of India? Sad indeed but are we running out of words to describe these gruesome killings. This whole thing seem to be well planned.
Whoever said anything about blaming the government of India,Sharma? You should be worrying about how its going to continue to affect you as you try to go about your business in good old Canada, and those others who will be typcast in their various adopted countries…..While we continue to worry about what group our thieves in Guyana belong to,we should be worrying about what group we fall into, and what view people will have of us,and how we will be treated in the UK and US as well, after all this hallaabboolloo!!!!
at least the state minister thought so as he resigned without being asked to waiting for a move here will not hold my breath though
Yes the government of India is to be blamed, according to reports they messed up with intellegence. They could have prevented that from happening.
My sympathy to the family! It is sad when someone is murdered, whether its Guyana or any other part of the world. I hope the culprit is caught soon.
A family dispute that ended in murder. Tragic!
Now how you come up with this? As weird as you may sound, you can be totally correct. If they were coming to steal, why they did not take his jewellery?
My sympathy goes out to the Roberts’s family may his soul rest in peace.
It seems a little FISHY to me, why did they not take the cell phone and jewellery ?
Knowing that those Scums like to call each other during there escape.
Soldier I do not agree with your comment, I would agree with BADNEWS and TONTO comment. You have got to understand that we have the right to free speech and if some of us feel that Guyana is that bad and wish to express our feelings about it, we have the right to do so. I would say that if you are looking to do fast go to GT. The President is crazy to think that people would want to come home and invest in Guyana, only to be robbed and murdered. Remember it was last week we saw on stab-news that a businessman was murdered in GT that was from New York, that is only one incident. Come on people get up and do some thing about the situation in Guyana.
PICKETT in front of the Parliment Building, courts, police stations and every where else you can, just a suggestion to see if that will and can help out the situation by getting the President and Ministers to get off their butts and do the right thing. Soldier as you said that America has a lot of killing everyday, why are people comparing America with Guyana when it comes to murders ? Get with the program Guyana population is much and I say again much smaller than the U.S.A. so we cannot compare there and here okay. Here we usually find them and jail them or may they get caught up in a shoot out and are killed, but GT it is difficult in capture them and I cannot understand why. My job is law enforcement and I wish that myself and a few others can get together and may be go home and meet with the president and share some of or skills on how they can clamp down on crime.
While visiting Guyana last year I asked a good friend who works in security what were his thoughts about returning home to live and invest in some kind of small business. His response was unforgettable. He said, “Joe, it’s a very good idea but be warned; you’d be wearing a target on your back day and night”.
Mr Jagdeo and others can come to the US every week and extol the virtues of investing in Guyana all they want. But as long as a bunch of inept, cluless, political bunglers remain unable to turn the country around from the disastrous course that they themselves helped to chart, I will forget my original dream of returning to live. Guyana will have to be “FOR SHORT VISITS ONLY”.
We all need to remember that Guyana and many other developing countries still operate on a cash and carry system which continues to create an immediate payday for criminals. With so much cash around in individual business with little or no deterrence, it becomes very easy and lucrative for criminals. If the situation was the same in the US or Canada, crime rate will go up 1000%! As a small business owner, you must budget for protection education and I think this is where the government should spend some money. I have a small business and my biggest expense is not advertising but security and this is Canada. Once we move away from 100% cash economy, we will see a reduction in crime. By the way I am going back and set up a business in Guyana We need pioneers.
