Please allow me,we have some of the most qualified Guyanese living abroad, that's in retairement,WHY DON'T THE REVALENT AUTHORITIES HIRE THESE GUYS to fix the ongoing problems of flooding. I know of this one person that's living in Canada that design & build the MMA project? Why not get in contact with him. Maybe he can help, or get someone to do so. I think it is time to put our difference aside and come up with a solution to save our beloved Guyana.

Sorry, MT. the Sierra Acaria mountain range is between the Uamuta reservoir and Guyana's south. The range is higher than the reservoir. So I'm wondering how water can flow UPHILL in OPEN channels. Try harder, MT!

If the present Guyana Government means well for Guyana... how about if they and all the opposition parties step aside for 5-10 years and give the Guyana Defense Force Corps of Engineers (working in close collaboration with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers) a shot at things.

Nothing, and I repeat, nothing, will change in Guyana unless it reaches a critical stage and a real tragedy unfolds. Both govt and the people have slipped into a coma of negligence and indifference. Neither group is holding its end of the bargain. The public continues to make the country a garbage heap while the govt continues to fail in countering the problem. On top of that both sides fail to realize that they cannot fight environmental and geographical realities.

Sadly, this cycle has to run its course until it reaches critical mass and something terrible happens and the course is changed. What the govt should really be encouraging is the movement to higher ground. A substantial part of the yearly funds to fight flooding should be allocated to building communities on higher ground, which is even close by to GT on the Soesdyke region. Georgetown could still remain a business centre but the govt could fund mass transit such as a train system to move people from GT to those areas.

Re: "[...The billion dollar question is: what are the plans and contingency policy of the political administration, to move the coastal population, industry, commerce, civilian infrastructure etc; to higher grounds and the large uninhabited, fertile and untapped interior areas of the country.

A public discussion by the political parties and civil organisations on the above, needs to be started, since, the environmental damage and danger, are already being felt by the society.

Procrastination, will only do further harm!...]" I keep asking over and over again - where are the plans for the construction of the long over due - L. F. S. Burnham International Airport which will most likely be located inland and will be the ideal infrastructural development facility for any foreseeable movement of the Guyanese population away from the risky low-lying coastal regions.

This is a pityful sight. The regime in power seem clueless as usual each an every time the floods arise. No one is held accountable as the poor and less fortunate suffer with the perils of diseases et al.
After the floods of 2005/06 not a single thing has been done to change the flow of water. The water accumulates on the coast. What was done with the millions spent on drainage! It's crystal clear.

branco is a tributary of the rio negro ,, which is the largest tributary of the Amazon ,, thus making branco a subtributary ,, tonot make this more confusing for the lesser minds ,, i said all the rivers in GY r subtributaries of the Amazon ,, they are sub sub trubutaries !

and as for the Kanuku mts,, they are more east of the flow of the branco and the flows more from south to north ,, many of the rivers have not as yet been charted in GY ,, but to get back to the reason for the deluge and the flooding ,, it is too complex an issue to be justified here ,, my posts is meant to highlight the major sources of the problem ,, that has only 1 solution ,, RELOCATION ! i said this in 2000 and i have been lamenting this all of 2006 to date ,, it makes for puerile satisfaction to be nit picking and splitting hairs while "rome burns" in this case water rather than fire ,, a more devastating force than fire in many respects ,, since and this is the logic to the floods "water has no shape or form" and the logic becomes much more substantive when i add ,, " if it can't go here it will go there" ! which is given credence ,,, by the panic that is slowly taking shape as the torture takes hold !...

i pray that fate is on "your" side !,, for the incompetence that is being orchestrated ,, by the govt ,, is to say ,, the obvious ! ,,,, well ,,,,, incompetent ! or is it the D&I ?????

MT, if you speak the truth then Guyana really faces a monstrous threat. I was thinking about buying a piece of land on the coast to build a little 3br house but this rainy season and its reviews, really have me thinking otherwise. Despite the facts and the flooding, people are still asking unbelievably high prices for low undeveloped lands; they behave as though they’re selling part of Miami. Many are ignorant of the challenges that lie ahead for Guyana; I hope the Government is not included.

Scientists and environmentalists are forecasting and warning, of increasing evironmental degradation and disasters, increasing global warming, rapidly melting ice caps and rising sea levels - which will threaten coastal communities globally and create hundreds of millions of 'sea refugees'.

Most of Guyana's population, industries, agriculture, commerce, trade, civil infrastructure, political and economic institutions etc; are on the low costal areas below sea level; the implications and consequence for Guyanese, of these dire forecasts and warnings are not only real but troubling.

The billion dollar question is: what are the plans and contingency policy of the political administration, to move the coastal population, industry, commerce, civilian infrastructure etc; to higher grounds and the large uninhabited, fertile and untapped interior areas of the country.

Gerald Otley Case was a PROLIFIC writer and researcher on Guyana's coastal environment in the 1910s - 40s. Wonder how many of our engineers are aquainted with his works.

Hi : re:"[...Flooding from the Essequibo,is not a factor in this current debacle, and it has nothing to do with dams or reservoirs in the Amazon catchment area. This is merely rainfall being allowed to accumulate on the low-lying coastal plain without adequate means of discharging it over the seawalls into the ocean...]" And, it does not take a "rocket scientist" to determine that the simple solution to rid the "excess" water from Guyana's low-lying areas is the introduction of (well, we heard of the Guns Of Navarone) how about if we call these the "Pumps of Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice"!

Now, how high will these "P-U-M-P-S" be positioned off the High Level Water Datum Line?
