Government is purchasing new electrical meters for the Guyana Power and Light (GPL), Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon said yesterday.
He told reporters at his weekly post-cabinet briefing that a contract of $30.3 million has been cleared for the GPL project.

Further, cabinet has also given the green light for projects in the security and water sectors. Luncheon said $65.7 million would be spent in the education sector to secure tools and equipment for secondary schools and practical instruction centres. While $31.1 million is to be spent in the water sector for the procurement of works to the Bare Root, East Coast Demerara water distribution network.

Buying new meeters will not solve the many problems GPL is having. Part of GPL’s problem, is it cannot supply its present customers with an adequate level of service. I just returned from a great visit home, and was disgusted with the level of service from GPL. The minimum voltage for most equipment to operate efficiently, is 110, yet most of the time in some areas, that level is often below 90. Another problem is lack of transformers. In one area, I counted 4 transformers in a five mile area, and 15 just a few miles down the same road, with similar population and businesses. How can GPL expect people to be motivated to pay their bills with this type of service?

Blame our Government for the treatment that we
are getting from GPL since they took over from
GEC. I’m visiting GY for holidays after four years
and have to deal with the same BULL my friend MACK.

Why are they even putting in meters????
    They never read them anyhow!!!
GPL pulls numbers for thin air and charges the customer willy nilly!!!

So I guess that I’ll finally have my meter assembled to my property in Corentyne that I had paid and waited for 4 years ago? Mr. Deokinandan, I want you to know I’m seeing the news and expects to get my damn meter now. You cannot Bull S**t me anymore.

$US150,000.00 can buy dozens of high power windmill generators that can pump many megawatts of power back into the electrical grid.
If you cannot accept change then prepare to be washed away with it.

This year, the United States passed Germany to become the world leader in wind generation, said the American Wind Energy Association in its year-end report – the third record year in a row and generated more than $18 billion in revenues. That 21,000 megawatts of capacity are expected to generate over 60 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2009, enough to serve over 5.5 million American homes.
Windmill electrical generators finally came through a long way from what old engineers thought them to be since 100yrs ago.

The Guyana govt. seems to be hell bent on squeezing every cent out of consumers, flogging dead horses and being impervious to the dissatisfaction of the citizens on the level of electrical service thrown on them ( not to mention water services)
But this cannot go on for long, for all indications show that change is inevitable in this planet soon.

The new meters is a complete waste from visionless, ruthless minds.

  5. john brown UNITED STATES says:

the government is looking for the easiest way to continue burdening the guyanese people….so they are buying more meters that maybe will hasten the registration of power usage….Guyanese people need to start looking for alternative ways to light their homes.
