On the heels of two major Guyana-linked drug busts in the last month, customs authorities at the Port of Miami, on Monday acting on a tip off unearthed 373 pounds of cocaine hidden in furniture aboard a vessel, whose last stop was in this country.

This bust involved 194 packages valued at US$5.5M which was concealed in 72 pieces of furniture which was packed in a container. Investigations will likely be done to determine if the furniture was loaded here.

According to NBC6.NET, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers inspecting the containers at the Miami seaport were alerted by a CBP K-9 to a specific container loaded with furniture.

The officers, attached to the Anti-Terrorism Contra-band Enforcement Team, proceeded to examine the furniture and discovered three packages concealed within one of the pieces of furniture. One of the packages was tested by the officers and the substance was positive for cocaine. More packages of the drugs were discovered in 71 other pieces of furniture.

The container with the furniture arrived in Miami last Friday aboard the freighter M/V Rio Para. The container was moved to the CBP facility for examination and opened Monday. The vessel’s last port call was Guyana, the news article stated.

“Our men and women are working diligently, especially during the holidays, in protecting our borders against all forms of terrorism. Stopping the flow of illegal drugs is one of Customs and Border Protection’s primary missions,” said Ruby Hogan, Port of Miami CBP director, was quoted as saying.

Director of Field Operations Harold Woodward was quoted by the NBC 6.NET as saying that “This is an outstanding seizure, and it was accomplished with one of our specialized Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Teams at the seaport. We mustn’t forget the great work our K-9 units perform at our seaports as well as the airports”.

Two shipments of pepper sauce from Guyana with cocaine stuffed into the dividers of the cartons were seized this month in Canada and the USVI.

I am totally aganist the production, transportation, sale and use of illicit drugs.Guyana needs to do more in the fight aganist Drugs

But are we not getting this thing a little skewed? Joe mentioned a drug test for users. Great idea. So what is keeping the authorities in the US and Europe etc from employing same? This is where the demand is, where the majority of the users and pushers are.

While I am for catching and prosecuting Drug barons and pushers etc. aking out a big fish only leaves room (power vacuum) for another fish to fill the vaccancy. This is a cycle that seems continuous and growing.

To really stop this drug problem, we have to address the end users/demand. If there is no demand then everything else falls away.

So basically the problem lies with getting addicts reformed and encouraging/preventing persons from trying/using drugs. Social. religous and other programmes need to focus more on this.

Shark, I was referring to the american population. What we are getting all bent out of shape over is just a drop in the bucket of all the drugs that are coming thru, believe me, who ever these guys are, they are small time pushers.

One popular American comedian once said that the way to solve the problem is to encarcerate the population and release the drug dealers. Problem solved, all their customers are now locked up.

      Joe.

  2. SAMANTHA UNITED STATES says:

This is very disgraceful indeed, no wonder the last time i visited Guyana for a weekend the customs officer tried to intimidate me. Why did i take $500 for a weekend trip?, little did he know in my country that’s no kind of money. Why was my shoes so heavy? and literally passed them through a scanner. I heard so many yyyyyyyyyys that day for that weekend trip than i had heard, when i spent 1 year out of the country, that the latter part of my trip was completely ruined, since i was already recovering from a late flight and a stupid excuse by the airline. All the recent busts puts innocent Guyanese returning from Guyana under scrutiny.

Anybody who believe that Canu can make any inroads into the drug business in Guyana has got to be living in cloud cukoo land. They remove a set of people with military training from Canu and appoint one of their boys- an electrican to head that body.See

  10. John Smith GUYANA says:

I think the only way the authorities are going to do anything, is when the ABC countries return the begging bowl empty, until something is actually done. It worked before and it will surely work again. But then we have so many big ones allegedly involved, the boat can’t be rocked too hard for fear of who might jump out.
