Dear Editor,

The statement articulated by Mr. Al Creighton about the evident lack of self-belief in the University of Guyana (SN.08.01.12) is a frank assessment of the current perceptions of the institution, it is also an opinion I share and one which underscores a dismal reality among the student populace and the country at large.

The institution is proliferated with problems many of which came to the fore at the public consultation but perhaps more grave than others was the underlying truth that the majority of persons at Turkeyen doubt the quality of the education they receive yet the record shows that many float around the campus year after year producing work that is reflective of a community of individuals struggling in their academic pursuits.

I could be wrong in assuming that persons find the university a challenge because of their perceptions of it and that this naturally affects the quality of graduates, but as a current student I confront it almost every day.

There is need for countless changes to be made on campus so as to foster a better learning environment but what happens in the interim?

Do we as students reject the experience because of the inadequacies or do we cope with it and surge ahead towards academic excellence in the face of adversity. I chose the latter and many people I know currently on campus have also. Hopefully, more will come to believe that this is possible.
