Dear Editor,

All complaints regarding serious charges of torture, corruption and other illegal actions involving government authorities should be conducted by independent investigators assigned to an equally independent oversight body. Such investigations must be timely, thorough, transparent, limited in time and the findings and recommendations must be made clear.

The current public institutions are not yet capable or trustworthy enough to investigate themselves. Government must make a prompt initial statement on its position and actions, if any, regarding such charges. This should be a national policy supported by all parties.

Yours faithfully,

(name and address supplied)
