You may be aware that a duty and tax free shop was opened recently at the Ferry Crossing at Moleson Creek. This duty free shop is being operated by an organisation in Suriname.
The employment of three young Guyanese girls who do not have the charisma and qualifications is most embarrassing as it is felt that they ought to showcase Guyana.
These salesgirls and cashier are very playful and most importantly they cannot speak proper English. The cashier cannot convert the exchange properly that is Euro to $US, Guilders to $US and Guilders to Guyana dollars. The writing of receipts is most embarrassing.
People from outside such as government officers and individuals purchase from this shop with the help of passengers’ passports.
If a check is made you will see that the stocks sold there mostly do not go on the ferry. What are the authorities doing about this? I can assure you that they are well aware of this. This is a port of entry and these breaches do not happen at Timehri.
I am a regular traveller on this ferry and a lot of visitors to Guyana drew my attention to the facts related in the first paragraph of this letter and I feel very embarrassed as a Guyanese.
I hope that the owners of this shop take remedial action and that the customs and GRA take the necessary action to stop the illegal sale of alcohol to persons who are not passengers and who do not take these items on the ferry.
