I don’t think America is ready for Obama

Dear Editor,

Barack Obama is a charismatic, articulate man but I have a feeling that Hillary Clinton will eventually get the nomination.

My view is that America is not – perhaps never will be – totally ready to accept a black man as president whose forebears were not ‘imported’ into the country centuries ago, with their descendants being American born and bred. The British media did their job well and succeeded in interviewing Mr Obama’s close relatives on his father’s side on their home turf, so we all ‘met’ the family. I read that some of his non-supporters had taken to using and emphasising his full name – Barack Hussein Obama! It has been mentioned that one objection may be that he is too young for the ‘top job’. However, let us not forget that John F Kennedy was roughly Mr Obama’s age when elected.

Perhaps Mr Obama’s children or grandchildren might fare better. One hopes so.

Yours faithfully,

Geralda Dennison
