Apparently businesses continue in their efforts to flout the tax laws and rip off consumers. The GRA has the authority under the laws to deal with uncustomed goods and this is exactly what it seeks to do.
When it does not act forcefully, it is criticised for not doing enough for consumers or being corrupt and when it tries to carry out its mandate, it is not given the suppport of the corporate community, the general public and more recently the judiciary.
The GRA is supposed to be a semi-autonomous agency which was legally established by the National Assembly and has powers vested in the laws to carry out enforcement activities.
If we intend to curb illegal practices and price gouging practices, we need to allow the GRA to do its job.
When one arm seems to oppose what the other does, it sends contradictory messages and signals that these arms are not about the same principles which leads to eyepass and law breaking.
I hope that the stakeholders, the media and the general public would see such issues as having national implications and would allow the law to take its course.
Banditry and skulduggery of any nature must be condemned and the law must be upheld.
