Leroy Hamer is a pioneer of his generation

Dear Editor,

The only village with backlands between Triumph and Enmore is Buxton- Friendship. All the rest is either Guysuco plantation or Mon Repos Agricultural station cultivation, a great farmers’ resource. The only people with freehold farms are long standing villagers of Buxton-Friendship and BV-Triumph. Mon Repos and Lusignan Enterprise farmers traditionally rented farm beds in the Buxton Friendship backlands. All other cultivation is either sparse and at the disposal of those controlling the estates or in sugar cane cultivation by the estates.

The announcement by Dr Luncheon is an announcement of collective punishment and really is an admission of failure.

I am glad to see that Leroy Hamer exists. I have always wondered at the fate of this great pioneer of his generation. He fought on the ground with youth to get them to return to the land and I have worked closely with several of them and in years past visited their backdam farms. I wrote about him and other purposeful youth and their Friend Bux Cooperative Society in Buxton-Friendship in print and memory and Desmond Trotman has assisted him with much of the ponderous computer work. He himself is very good at figures and estimating production. I have accompanied him to the LBI administrative manager. Hamer should be honoured by any government or honours committee that knows anything

The government’s latest plan is a foolish enterprise and is like shouting \”Thief man, look out ! I am coming” as teacher George Younge would have said.

How are they going to rescue the sunken bulldozer? With helicopters or what?

I shall expand later.

Yours faithfully,

Eusi Kwayana
