Several times when I have reached the convent/Old Folks Home at Thomas and East Streets, I hear a great straining and heaving. This turns out to be one of Mother Teresa’s nuns as she struggles with the full garbage bin to get it out to the street for emptying from its normal place round the back near the kitchen.
I have recently spent some time back in Glasgow in my native Scotland. There all the bins have handles and wheels. They are attached to a simple trolley structure from which they are detached for emptying out at the front of the property, when the garbage lorry comes round. They are then replaced in the wheeled frame and can be wheeled back by any housewife without effort.
The bins also come in three colours: one for perishable foodstuffs, one for recyclable bottles etc. and another for more solid trash.
I daresay it would cost some money to provide the city with wheeled bins, but I am sure many householders would be willing to buy them if they were available. It would also make it easier for the Sisters.
