Back pay owing since 2005

Dear Editor,

I have been working with the Guyana Sea Defence for the past twelve years as a Security Guard at No. 7 Village West Coast Berbice. They are moving this office from No 7 Village to Onverwagt.

This office at No 7 Village is well built and the compound is well fenced and this office is on state land. The only thing that this place doesn’t have is lights. The office at Onverwagt is okay too and the compound is fenced but it has no gate and it has no toilet for the Security Guards.

The office at No 7 Village is just two villages away from where I am living and most of the workers live around the area. Now that they moved me from No 7 village to Onverwagt I have to spend six thousand dollars a month on transportation to go to work. For the past three months no one has told me anything about refunding my travelling expenses.

I accepted this job because it was close to where I am living.

They owe us back pay since 2005. Our union is the GLU but from since the day we joined them, I have not seen one of their representatives again.

Yours faithfully,

(name and address supplied)
