The police at Bartica should have tried to defend themselves

Dear Editor,

It is disheartening to see the tragic loss of life continues. It seems like a trend now. A few killings, a massive killing, a few killings, another massive killing. I suppose we can expect a few other killings now before the next massive killing? When is it all going to stop? I hope the government will have a heavy security presence in and around the prisons, all prisons, from the night of Friday Feb 22.

My condolences to the family who lost loved ones including the family of the slain policemen. But to be completely frank, it was pathetic to hear that the policemen were slain while hiding in cupboards. If the policemen cannot defend themselves, how can they defend the citizens of this nation? Why is there always inaction at all levels in public institutions? The police headquarters was attacked. The police force was warned that policemen will be killed. We have seen evidence that these brutal killers leave no one they encounter alive. It is sad that these policemen did not make an effort to defend themselves when the evidence shows that they would have been killed anyway. Had they made an attempt to defend themselves, one or more of the killers might have been wounded and now in custody to interrogate in an effort to capture the other killers.

This is all unacceptable. Henry Greene should be fired or demoted to senior superintendent. Appoint the next person in line as Commissioner. If he/she doesn’t perform within a month, fire that person. We are fed up. Clement Rohee should resign or be fired. Appoint someone from outside all the parties to the post. Neil Isaacs was around as security advisor to DDL. If he still is, appoint him Minister of Home Affairs or someone like him or suspend the post and give the person the title National Security Administrator. Look in the private sector, for a head of security that is competent at analysing information in decision making and is a strategic thinker and appoint that person to the position.

Yours faithfully,

Ganesh Singh
