There was no need to apologise

Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter captioned “Hammie apologises” (GC 080.103.12) by Mr Hamilton Green where he apologised to a Mr Suseran.

The fifth paragraph stated and “However, I assume the use of the word mass did not intend to refer to going through the procedure of the Eucharistic Liturgy as done by the Roman Catholics and some Anglican Churches”.

I take umbrage when the letter states ‘some’ Anglican churches. Let me state quite emphatically that all Anglican and Episcopalian Churches all over the world, including Guyana, have the same Eucharistic Mass as the Catholics.

The Anglican Church still has The Apostolic Succession after the break away from Rome centuries ago and therefore we have Ordained Bishops, Priests and Deacons who still hold on to the Catholic faith. I can further point out that there were/are many Priests from both the Anglican and Roman Catholic faiths who have switched churches from time immemorial. Mr Suseran, as a devout Catholic, should know this as in his hometown of New Amsterdam at the Anglican Church of All Saints, there is a Roman Catholic Priest, Fr George Spencer, who made the switch, officiating to the needs of that congregation.

Although the writer of this letter is a staunch Anglican, I admire what the other religious churches are doing on Good Friday which is very much needed in our society at this time, and I can assure all concerned that I will be attending the Atonement Service being held at the Cenotaph. Only God can judge us for what we are, not man, and Mr Suseran should come down from his pedestal as a devout Catholic and come to acknowledge that we are all placed here on this earth to be Disciples of Christ and not to criticise just for the want of criticising. Hammie should never have apologised. In my estimation, he did nothing wrong.

Yours faithfully,

Wycliffe O Thomas
