Dear Editor,

I am disappointed that President Jagdeo did not find it necessary to inform the Guyanese people about the status of the torture report in his independence speech. I believe that at this juncture, when we are celebrating forty-two years of independence, any allegations of a breach of citizens’ fundamental rights deserve direct attention from the Commander-in-Chief, especially since these allegations have been laid at the feet of the disciplined forces. It was the President who, months ago, stated that the report had to be reviewed by the Defence Board. I think the President had an opportune moment to bring the Guyanese people up to date on the investigations.
