The GWI head should demand to know why it took the Peter’s Hall office three days to seal a broken water main

Dear Editor,

Many thanks to you for publishing my letter in your Friday, June 27 issue highlighting the inefficiency and lackadaisical attitude of the Guyana Water Inc (GWI) in fixing a damaged water main next to my property at Lots 1-4 Continental Park, East Bank Demerara.

Finally, three days after the main was damaged and having lost approximately 72,000 gallons of water, the GWI fixed the problem last Friday afternoon, the very day my letter was published in your newspaper. Thanks GWI.

GWI relentlessly advocates water conservation but will be hard pressed to defend the general feeling that it does not practise what it preaches. It would appear as though only when such problems with the utilities are highlighted in the media that remedial action is adopted.

GWI’s head, Mr Karan Singh, should demand that his regional office at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, where the problem was promptly reported, provide a plausible and acceptable explanation why it took three days to seal a broken water main.

Editor, I am also still awaiting Mr Singh’s comments on my letter which you forwarded to him. After all, water is life and he has often reminded us to “save it.”

Yours faithfully,
Mahadeo Panchu
