Leonora Park used to be a playground for everyone

Dear Editor,

As a supplement to what I had written earlier on Leonora Park, I forward to you a copy of a plan as well as my letter to the President dated March 6, 2007. [Map and letter provided] The map shows the area in Para Field, Leonora, which was given away as house lots mostly to people from outside Leonora. This land was reserved when the Para Field Housing Scheme was laid out.

For well over 100 years Hindus at Phagwah Festival would burn Holika there. In the 1960s people squatted there, and the estate administration dismantled the houses. In 1975 squatting again took place and this time the PNC administration stopped it.

I should have told you that this was a playground for all Leonora. Young people from three housing schemes would congregate here and play either hard or soft ball and also volleyball. It was after Leonora residents had a meeting with officials in 2005 that a survey of only this limited area was undertaken to satisfy the vanity of some.

Yours faithfully,
Vaidram Persaud
