The front-page leads in the Friday, June 27, 2008 issues of the two most widely circulated dailies in Guyana – Stabroek News and Kaieteur News – quoted respectively from (1) a statement made by acting Commissioner of Police Henry Greene, and (2) from a Joint Services report which indicated that “All signs point to ‘Fineman’” and “Police analysis suggests that ‘Fineman’ killed miners.” Both statements were made in relation to the brutal slaying of eight miners at Lindo Creek.

It is ironic to note the efforts of the government, through President Jagdeo and the Joint Services to link the ‘Fineman’ gang to this latest atrocity. But the view which is held by citizens is that culpability rests with the security forces. The interest of the government and the Joint Services would have been better served if they had allowed an independent, impartial inquiry to determine what took place.
All decent Guyanese should support the efforts of the families of the deceased to secure the services of the UK forensic experts to observe the conduct of any forensic examination.
