Dear Editor,

Slavery being the ultimate in human rights violations I am taking this opportunity to advocate that Freedom Day, a holiday that is celebrated here on August 1 each year to commemorate the freedom of African slaves in 1838, after around two hundred and eleven years of slavery in this country, be amended to ‘Freedom and Human Rights Day,’ beginning August 1, 2008, so as to appropriately reflect the invaluable contribution made by these people, who absolutely refused to accept the abuse of their fundamental human rights.

Yours faithfully,
